(Rhodius), George: Indianapolis, Ind(iana)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

His health is good but he is absolutely sick of the way of living. It does not matter what he does, always a kick. Some of the underhanded ways of some people are enough to drive him crazy. There is no use of him trying to please.

1901 May 2
(Funk, Robert) Bob: Los Angeles, Cal(ifornia)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He was worried to hear that Edwards was at West Baden. Edwards needs a trip to California; it would do him good. He expects to have a good time during the Fiesta. President McKinley's being there makes it a banner attraction. The Notre Dame baseball team seems to be doing well. He'd give a whole lot to get his degree with the boys this year.

Eugenie, Sister Marie: St. Mary's, Notre Dame, Indiana
 to Father (Fitte):

She cannot sufficiently express her gratitude to all at Notre Dame. They have earned immortal glory. Mother Ascension will be their guardian angel. It is not the first time that the priests of Notre Dame have shown that they were men of heart and of faith.

St. Joseph Sanitarium, Mt. Clemens, Mich(igan)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Had he fot the telegram in time he would have attended the funeral of his old friend Mother Ascension. He is resting at a magnificent sanitarium conducted by the Sisters of Charity. He does not think he will ever come to Notre Dame again as all his old friends are gone save Edwards and two others.

They are to take a villa in the country for the summer so that she can be out in the pure air. Herman appreciates the postals from the United States; he is doing well at his studies.

1901 May 6
Lucretia, (C.S.C.), Sister M.: Salt Lake City, (Utah)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mother (Ascension, C.S.C.) seemed to receive at the end in abundance what no one dared to give her in a very small degree, when kind words and acts would have greatly cheered her lonely hours. Now she is beyond reach of her enemies. She never left her but she felt determined to live a better religious and work more earnestly for God.

1901 May 8
Lee, John: Chicago, Illinois
to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Michigan

Lee invites the attention of Brownson to the fact that a committee was appointed by the Association of Christian Ministers to direct a movement for the amelioration of the condition of the Protestant churches in Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. He quotes The Ave Maria, Notre Dame, October 9, 1897, that the Protestants labor under very oppressive conditions in South America. Letters addressed to President McKinley, Ex-President Harrison, to Senators Frye, Hoar, Foraker, and Holliver, and to some governors and judges calling their attention to the fact that no public religious services can be held in Peru except by the Roman Catholic Church, were most encouragingly replied to. A letter indicating that Brownson favors religious freedom in Peru will be most warmly appreciated.

Sanford, Louisa B.: (St. Louis, Missouri)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Ben proposes to go to Notre Dame for a couple of days. Dr. Dunn, a school-mate of his at St. Louis University, goes with him. She hopes Edwards will not think it strange of her to ask him not to invite Ben to indulge in stimulants of any kind as he is doing fine and she would not like to yield to temptation.

Kiefer, Herbert: Louisville, K(entuck)y
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

They were greatly disappointed when Edwards did not come to Louisville. He knows Edwards would enjoy the games. Tonight Nat Goodwin and Maxine Elliot will present "Merchant of Venice", and on the next two mights E. H. Southern will appear in "Hamlet". There are a great number of attractions to divert his mind with the result that he will fail in chemistry.

Toohey, C.S.C., Father J(ohn) M.:
Holy Cross College, New Orleans, L(ouisian)a
 to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Between his work at the college and in the parish which is five miles away, he has little time for writing. He goes to the parish (Sacred Heart), twice a week. The Spanish document to which Edwards refers was brought back by Toohey. It is an account of the first pastoral visitation of the diocese of New Orleans. Toohey thought it too full of little details to be of interest except as a document of reference. He much regrets the death of Mother Ascension (C.S.C.). She was indeed a true friend.

Eccles, Charlotte O'Conor: (London, England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

It has been borne in on Eccles that a great and intelligent effort must be made to remedy Ireland's condition and this can only be achieved by persuading the people to change their ways and ideas on many points. She has been lecturing throughout the country to vast audiences on the need for improvement in their homes. This has been done in connection with Horace Plunkett's new Board of Agriculture and Technical Instruction. Everywhere one finds priests and people anxious to better Irish social conditions. She will see if there is anything among her manuscripts likely to suit the Ave Maria. She is sending one or two Irish papers.

She has always been aware of the strong affection between Edwards and Mother Ascension, (C.S.C.) and she is sure that he returned to her in her failing years a great deal of the sympathy she gave Edwards as a youth and young man. It was such a pleasure for Mother Ascension to see Edwards in her inforced retirement.

Doyle, W(illia)m T.: Milwaukee, Wis(consin)
to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Doyle has sent a book by W. S. Lily which he presumes Brownson will review by the time of his next visit. Having read Herbert Williams' article in the Dublin Review, Doyle thinks Williams is too lenient to the Cardinal. He quotes another letter of the Rev. H. J. D. Ryder published in The Tablet, May 11, regarding the Catholic doctrine on Development. He asks Brownson to write an article in the Catholic Quarterly or the Dublin Review on this subject. An article by Wilfred Ward in the Fortnightly Review is on "Newman and Sabatier." Doyle corrects Brownson on page 41 of the "Middle Life."

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Lately in Sydney the Catholic body had much to contend against owing to an action brought against the Cardinal's secretary Father ( ) O'Haran for adultery. Lenihan's priests are very good, but their financial powers are limited. Notre Dame is better known there now.

S(eton), Mgr. R(obert): Jersey City, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

He thanks Edwards for his letters, always well-written, always interesting. He has all but made up his mind to go to Europe and spend the rest of his days. He was not invited by Bishop Cochran or the Archbishop to the Laetare Medal affair. He was astounded by what Father (Cornelius G.) O'Keefe of Highland Falls told him of his troubles with Archbishop (Michael Augustine) Corrigan. If Edwards could take notes on the matter, it would be material for the history of the Church in the United States.

Taunton, Father Ethelred L.: London, England
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Indiana

Taunton thanks Hudson for the notice of his book. Rev. Reviewer and Father John Gerard are, he understands, one and the same person. Taunton is going to tackle The Month in a special series of Letters from the Country. He is afraid they will be in for a lot of No Popery business over the Accession Oath for which they may thank the Holy Father. He hears that they are in a bad odor in Ireland as they are opposing the Catholic University as they did Teste Leone XIII to Archbishop (John) Ireland.
