McSorley, (C.S.P.), Father J(oseph): Washington, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

McSorley is sending some matter from Father (George) Tyrrell, (S.J.), in McSorley's opinion some of his best work. It seems the Jesuit censors passed it but through a row with the diocesan censor the publication was stopped and never put on the market. He has marked certain excerpts which have appeared in the C(atholic) W(orld), A(merican) E(cclesiastical) R(eview) and the A(ve) M(aria). The rest Hudson is to choose from and publish what he pleases. Such are Tyrrell's instructions.

1902 Dec. 22
Laugel, Father G(eorge): Ruth, Huron, Co(unty), Mich(igan)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Father Laugel asks Brownson to send him a copy of Orestes A. Brownson's life if the book is finished and published. He cannot think of dying until he has read this book. The older he gets the more admiration he feels for the greatest man ever born in this country. The bishops of the country would profit much if they would force their seminarians to read the works of Brownson. Though he avoids judging other men and looks only at his own misery and poverty, he nevertheless has a sadness of the deepest melancholy when fine intelligent young priests come to him as ignorant of the nobler and diviner things as stones. He gives the example of a young priest who had grave trials and afflictions and to whom he gave the life of Gallitzin to read and to console him. There is a great chapter of trials able to console everyone. Would Brownson believe it? A young man born in this country, making all of his studies here, and not knowing more about Gallitzin than a Flathead Indian Of course, not one of three hears of the works of Brownson. Nor does he blame them since their professors should tell them continually to read St. John Chrysostom, St. Augustine, St. Thomas, and Brownson. It would make grants of them. He wishes Henry a holy Christmas and a Happy New Year.

1902 Dec. 23
Doyle, W(illia)m T.: Milwaukee, (Wisconsin)
 to H(enry) F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Doyle received Brownson's letter of Dec. 7 as he was leaving for New York and read it on the train. He is sorry to hear that Brownson has been troubled with the gout and hopes he is better. He himself has had a bad cold and a touch of bronchitis since his return from the East. Fr. Gerard's letter reminded him of his treatment of Sir Howarth's article, that is, of ignoring the main issue for a side issue. Father Eugene (A.) Magevney, S.J., said that it seemed too bad that some enterprising publisher did not have the Works for sale since every priest's library should contain a set. Many priests did not know where to get the set. At Johns Hopkins University a professor made a reference to the Works. When students asked him where the works could be found, he said that they were out of print and quite rare. Thus the need for constant advertisement. He repeats Father (Joseph J.) Oberle's question of why Brownson has not been willing to write a text on philosophy since such a work is needed. It takes eleven days for his Tablet to arrive, and as yet, his Dec. 13 issue has not arrived. He wishes Brownson and the family a Merry Christmas and begs the favor of his prayers.

Harson, M.J.: Providence, R(hode) I(sland)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He was pleased to learn that his article in "The Pilot" impressed Edwards so favorably. He would like to help along the world of Catholic thought. Those with positive faith in God could be easily numbered. This outburst explains his admiration for (Orestes A.) Brownson. Twenty years ago he wrote to Lawrence Kehoe expressing a hope that he would do certain things. Kehoe replied there were many things he could do if he had support. The Catholic public spirit has changed very little. He sent the plaster cast of the Brownson bust to Georgetown (University) but will present a replica to Notre Dame when it is made. He trusts his picture will please Edwards. Mr. Feely wishes that he send Edwards regards.

Their agent promised to make the picture for the University of Notre Dame gratis with a view for more of his work. Now they send a man to collect. He paid the man, Sisters of the Holy Cross refused. If Edwards can give him the address of the house, he will correct for them their methods.

Doyle, W(illia)m T.: Milwaukee, (Wisconsin)
to (Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Michigan)

Doyle will remit later for vol. 20 to be sent to Rev. James Oberle, of Milwaukee. He trusts that Brownson did not consider the last letter as impertinent, and it was certainly not intended as such. Doyle quotes from Dillon's "American and English Jurisprudence" concerning the Roman law. Has Brownson read J. Rickaby's (S.J.) "Political and Moral Essays"? If not, he would be pleased to forward it for criticism. Doyle quotes James DeWitt Andrew's "American Law" on the concept of private property. P.S. Doyle has enclosed a check for $2.25 and asks if it is agreeable.

Seton, William: New York, (New York)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He was glad to hear from Edwards, and wrote his brother that he had late news of Edwards. He is afraid the near future may witness great changes in Italy. As France has gone so will go Italy and then Germany. Nothing will save the Church from great lesses in the next fifty years except a Christian Democracy, but it is too late. He will send Edwards the coming "Catholic Church".

Tyrrell, S.J., Father G(eorge): ( , England)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

As to the titles, Tyrrell must trust to Father (Joseph) McSorley, (C.S.P.). He kindly acts for Tyrrell in America. All these articles were to have been published a year ago with the approbation of their Jesuit censors. But when the book was in print Cardinal (Herbert Vaughan) claimed a right of re-censorship as a condition of his imprimatur. The provincial thought it would be unwise to apply to another English bishop, or to publish the book anywhere immediately. But by the time it has come out in fragments it will be safe to publish it in America where those fragments will have appeared. Tyrrell printed a few copies to circulate among his personal friends but only 8 have got or will get to America. He mentions this, because Father (Herman J.) Heuser found an objection in it to publishing them in his periodical. The great thing is to get as much of the book published in fragments as possible.

Deziel, Raymond: Columbia, M(issouri)
 to H(enry) F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

As a friend and parishoner of Father Randall of the city, Deziel would like to write Henry a few words about an important matter. Father Randall has been kind enough to present Deziel with a copy of volume XIX of the Works. He asks Brownson for the privilege of translating the volume into French, being well qualified to do the work, thinking that such a translation would be effective and valuable among the French Catholics of America and Canada. He asks Brownson which firm could do the work and thanks him for any attention that he may give.

Lenihan, Bishop Geo(rge) M.: Auckland, (New Zealand)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

If the Inquisition knew Hudson's sentiments they would soon place him where the Ave Maria wouldn't trouble him. Father ( ) Lightheart wasn't much rejoiced at Hudson's idea of the uselessness of his visit, but he is grateful for his interest in the Maoris. He is earnest in his work but like most Dutchmen he wants twice as much as he will ever get. Lenihan finds it difficult to make ends meet. If only he were in some inferior position more suited to his talents. The Maoris are a noble race and the Fathers who attend them speak in high terms of their goodness and virtue.

McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J(oseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

McQuaid flattered himself that he had won a great victory in forcing Hudson into a short holiday. July 12 is the 35th anniversary of McQuaid's consecration. They are having a scandal in Rochester. An ex-Lazarist from Germantown has turned up in Rochester after eloping with a married woman, a convert. The affair is ventilated daily in the papers. The moral is to let candidates for the priesthood find out their difficulties before obligations are assumed. Hudson will soon have Archbishop (James Edward) Quigley in his neighborhood. He will bring order out of confusion. They had a visit from Father (Thomas) Corbett, (C.S.C.)
