Tyrrell, S.J., Father G(eorge):
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

There is just bare chance that Archbishop (John Murphy) Farley may give an imprimatur to Tyrrell's book. He sent it today as Longman is anxious to publish it. Will Hudson hold off publication of any further extracts from it?

to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

For over five months he has been extremely ill with heart disease. Despite the doctors he is still alive but confind to his room. He has two excellent curates who relieve him of all responsibility. The bishop made him permanent pastor and dean of the diocese. He would like to celebrate the golden jubilee of his ordination. He was ordained at Notre Dame Nov. 26, 1854. He has a beautiful church, convent and school free from debt.

Sanford, L(ouise) B.: St. Louism Missouri)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Ben says he intends going to Notre Dame but they think it would be useless; he has had his own way too much to obey rules. The superior of the retreat advised her to let him go to Notre Dame. She does not know what the correspondence between Ben and Father Morrissey amounted to.

S(toddard), C(harles W(arren): Cambridge, Mass(achusetts)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard is still there because his goods have not come on from Washington. He asks that twenty copies of "The Lepers of Molokai" be sent to Mrs. Bellamy Storer, United States Legation, Vienna, Austria. What fun it will be to get settled and at work in his solitude. His rooms at Prescott Hall are like a little flat.

Tenney, Jessaline R. B. (Sister Catharine, O.P.): N(ew) Y(ork), (New York)
to H(enry) F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

The title "Mayor" shall not go but the title "Dear Uncle Henry" must be used and it could not be otherwise, since he and his family are so dear to her. She asks Brownson to give her a set of his works on "Grandpa" (O.A. Brownson) and his life. Though she could purchase the works as she has done in making presents of them, she would prize a set from Brownson as a gift. Also the community of which she is in charge would be highly honored and would appreciate such a gift autographed by Brownson. She saw Mother Sallie (Brownson) last week and really thought that she looked much better than she did the last time she saw her. She is kept very busy and Reverend Mother Vicar is delighted to have her. Ruth (Odiorne) was over the other day and brought little Baby Ruth, and had time permitted, she would have taken her to Manhattenville for Sally to see. However, it is a pleasure postponed. She thanks Brownson for his visits to Grosse Pointe to see Mary. She asks Henry to pray for her and her work.

1903 Oct. 7
Seton, Archbishop Robert: Pau, (France)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Seton received Hudson's letter when he returned from Rome the day before yesterday. Hudson was not the only one who was surprised that Seton was not elevated earlier. He might mention Senator (Theodore Fitz) Randolph, the late General Joseph Warren Revere, the late Chief Justice (Job H.) Lippincott and Senator (James) Smith. Seton was devoted and led a good life, but was very much of an American. Influential elements believed that the American element had no show among Catholics.

Dutton, (Ira B.) Joseph: Kalawao, (Hawaiian Islands)
 to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

At the request of Bishop Libert (Hubert Boeynaems) Dutton is putting in shape certain papers relating to Father (Joseph) Damien (de Veuster, SS.CC.) The bishop has brought Dutton from Honolulu and Father ( ) Maxim has sent from Kalaupapa such letters as are on file with the mission. Dutton just came across a list of Damien's effects. He mentions this because of a note at the bottom of the last page. The note praises the work of (Charles Warren) Stoddard and Hudson in establishing admiration for Damien. There was another paper, a letter addressed to Father Wendelin (Moellers, SS.CC.) Dutton quotes from this. Damien's vaccination date was probably 1877, not 1887. The papers are all ready to go to Bishop Libert.

Spearman, Frank H.: Wheaton, Ill(inois)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

They spent August in northern Michigan. He left Clark at Georgetown and went to New York to visit his sister. The greatest pleasure was meeting ( ) Brownell, who was not in the best of health. Spearman knows no man who so resembles Hudson. Spearman asked him how as George Meredith's publisher he dared write his impressions as frankly as he had done. It is like Hudson to speak so kindly of "Doctor Bryson". "The Daughter of a Magnate" which ran serially in the "Saturday Evening Post" will probably prove a much more popular story. They hope that some chance will bring Mrs. Spearman's sister to them.

(Wattson, Reverend Lewis Thomas), Paul, S.A.: Garrison, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Wattson thanks Hudson for his letter and book. He thinks God intends the Society of the Atonement to be more than a stepping stone. He hopes it may be a causeway over which vast people can pass to the fold of Peter. His heart burns with shame at last week's diatribe against the Holy See by Bishop (Charles Chapman) Grafton.

McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J.: Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He has not forgotten Edwards request for the menu of St. Bernard's Seminary for a week, but he will wait until they settle down as it might be thought they were doing their best to make a good impression on new students. He is glad to learn that the increased cost has not diminished greatly the attendance at Notre Dame (University). His experience at Seton Hall was the more they charged, the larger was the attendance, provided they gave values for the money. At St. Bernard's they are giving board and tuition worth $400 for $800 per annum. They now have 26 dioceses represented in the seminary.

(Foley), Byrd M.: (Chicago, Illinois)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edwards' kind letter was not unappreciated. She had many things to do as her parents celebrated their 25th anniversary. They had only a small dinner party. She supposes Edwards has been traveling around quite a little. Father Evers sent her some rosaries blessed by the Holy Father. Bob wrote a few times.

Lenihan, Bishop George M(ichael): Auckland, (New Zealand)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The superior of the Maori mission is always away on a collecting tour. Father ( ) Bruning has sent Hudson's letter to him and asked Lenihan to furnish him with a portion of the offering. Lenihan likes the superior to do this work. He sends a pamphlet compiled and issued lately by him. The insolence of the Anglican body is overbearing. Lenihan hopes to make a tour of his diocese after November 16.

O'Sullivan, Father T(imithy) D.: Chicago, (Illinois)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Preuss' review of Bishop (John L.) Spalding's "Opportunity" was quite Jesuitical. The Critique was very severe not to say unjust. O'Sullivan is sorry that Edwards cannot use Prof. McGriskin's library. Edwards is very popular with the young ladies and they wonder why he does not make one of them happy for life.

Doyle, W(illia)m T.: Milwaukee, Wis(consin)
to (Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Michigan)

Doyle presumes that Brownson has seen the notice of "Christianity and Modern Civilization", page 537, of the Oct. 24 "Ave Maria". Father (Daniel E.) Hudson seems surprised at Lilly's attitude and yet he is continually lauding Newman who was the protagonist in holding these opinions. He quotes our American Cardinal (James Cardinal Gibbons) in "The Century" for September. In Doyle's opinion making Newman a cardinal was one of the mistakes of the late pontiff. He encloses two clippings from "The Chronicle" to show that at least one paper has the courage to write against the prevailing heresy. Father Wynne writes in the "London Tablet" that the nine Fridays give no difficulty in this country. Doyle quotes the Catholic World for April, 1866, giving Dr. Newman's answer to Dr. Pusey.

1903 Oct. 27
Dean, Herbert S.: London, (England)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dean is a recent convert, and a journalist and author. He was for some years assistant editor of "Church Review", the organ of the extremist party of ritualists in the Church of England. He would like to offer occasional contributions to the Ave Maria. He has the friendship of Canon (James?) Moyes, Father Bertrand Wilberforce, O.P., Father Vincent McNabb, O.P., the Passionist Father Arthur Devine. Dean wonders if American Catholics have any short account of the first three superiors of the Congregation of Stone, Mothers Margaret Hallahan, Francis Drane, and Imelda Poole. He was left in charge of "Church Review" while two of his directors and his editor came to the United States to raise money. They were the Duke of Newcastle, Harry Wilson and Clifton Kelway(?). They were feted by ritualist congregations, but did not succeed in their object. A year later the paper came to an end. The ritualists in England as a body are nowhere near finding their way to the Church. Spencer Jones' book owes its popularity to the use their own people make of it.

Randall, Father W(illia)m E.: Columbia, M(issouri)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Father Randall had received last evening the set of histories which he was promised. Brownson judged right: that he would prefer a second-hand set free to a set unused but expensive. Yet he can say that these volumes possess for him a value not to be found in new owes. He hopes that he may understand their contents as well as those who have used them in the past but thinks this is a vain hope. He is deeply indebted to Brownson and thanks him for his kindness.
