Herbert, M(ary) E(lizabeth Lady Herbert of Lea: London, England)
to Father Daniel (E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

An article was sent to her in Rome last month from the Ave Maria on mission work among the negroes. Herbert read it with interest all the more because Cardinal (Herbert) Vaughan associated her with his missionary work. While in Rome her time was spent chiefly in looking over boxes of Vaughan's letters for his biography. Herbert felt his opinion on the subject might be of use in stirring up American Catholics to do more for the negro missions. It seems incomprehensible that Catholics have such a strong feeling against the colored race.

Roosevelt, Theodore: Washington, (District of Columbia)
to Rev. John B. Worrall: Kansas City, Kansas

(Copy) What he writes is personal and not for publication. Last winter Roosevelt received a delegation of Welsh Methodist clergymen at the White House. He received Cardinal (Francesco) Satolli at the White House exactly as he received Methodists, Baptists,. Presbyterians, Lutherans, etc. Roosevelt desires to handle himself towards Catholics exactly as he should wish a Catholic President to handle himself towards Protestants.

Bakewell and Cornwall: St. Louis, M(iss)o(uri)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Indiana

A few days ago L(ouise) Mulot presented them a letter from a Louis Fusz, stating that Mulot wished to procure a patent on her system of teaching the blind. They learned that the stylographic chart which she employs for teaching writing to the blind has been in use by her in France for 10 years. This would prevent her from obtaining a patent on the invention in this country. To obtain copyright protection it would be necessary to have the book reprinted here. They do not know that the matter interests Hudson sufficiently to undertake the expense of procuring the copyright and patent.

Kittell, Father Ferdinand: Loretto, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson's sympathy is consoling. Kittell cannot understand how any bishop can be opposed to the Total Abstinence League. It is a pity for Bishop (Eugene Augustine) Garvey. In many ways he is an excellent man but he scarcely ever opens his mouth without putting his foot in it. During his speech at the consecration banquet of Bishop (John Francis) Canevin, the Pittsburgh priests hissed him. Kittell is told that Garvey imagines that he is disgruntled because he was not made the first Bishop of the new see. At the appointment of Garvey C(harles) M. Schwab was greatly disappointed. He expected that Kittell would receive the appointment. Kittell heard that Archbishop (John) Ireland expressed himself to the same effect. Last November Bishop (John Walter) Shanahan took the pledge from Kittell for life. Last Sunday Shanahan came there and preached at both masses. Schwab asked Shanahan why the Church does not allow Catholics in this country to become Freemasons. He intimated that he would think nothing of giving an endowment of a million dollars to the Catholic University if the ban were removed. Kittell's present plan is to visit the Exposition. Archbishops Keane and Ireland. spend some time in Waukesha and call at Notre Dame on his return trip.
