S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): San Jose, Calif(ornia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard has been at San Jose with the exception of five days in the country he had not seen in fifty years. Tomorrow he hopes to pass his first mission article to the editor of the "Sunset" Magazine. April 3 is just one year from the day of his arrival on the coast. He thinks he will be leaving San Jose in a couple of weeks; he hopes to spend a little time at Santa Clara College and in San Francisco with his people. He may spend the summer in Monterey.

Tyrrell, (S.J.), Father G(eorge): Freiburg, Germany
to Father Daniel (E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Tyrrell thanks Hudson for his kind words in the "Ave Maria" quoted in the Tablet. Tyrrell thinks he will weather the storm though just now fanaticism has its way. He hopes to write again when things quiet down. Heretofore his writings had to be eviscerated by censors or smuggled through at risk of his life. He will probably be here till May.

Rooker, Bishop F(rederick) Z.: Jaro, (Philippine Islands)
 to Monsignor A(mbrose) A. Agius, O.S.B.:

Rooker has received the copy of the letter of Father (J.) Freri, general director of the society for the Propagation of the Faith in New York. Rooker is pleased to know that some interest has been excited in America over the situation of the Church in the Philippine Islands. Rooker can give work to all the priests Freri can send him, provided they are of an absolutely superior type, and young enough to be able to learn the native language. Any priest coming to Jaro should arrange with some friends in the States to keep him supplied with intentions until he can get hold of the situation at Jaro, and see how to collect enough to live on.

McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J(oseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Bishop (John) Clancy of Sligo called attention to Davitt's letter in the Dublin Freeman's Journal of Jan(uary) 30 as McQuaid was evidently the culprit. Davitt in another letter gave (Cardinal Francesco) Satolli's famous proposition as proof that American bishops had no right to refuse absolution to parents sending a child to a state school. In the same issue an editorial appeared giving the Pope's decision to the contrary and covering up Satolli's blunder as best he could. McQuaid thinks the affair is closed, and is preparing to start another wing to St. Bernard's; the seminary will then accommodate over two hundred. Bishop Hickey is busier than before the mitre was put on his head.

Maler, O.S.B., Father Bede: Chinchuba, L(ouisian)a
to Father (Willian J. Marr) (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

It would give him great pleasure to be present on May 3 at Notre Dame, but he is too poor to pay the expenses of the trip. He wishes a very happy feast day to all the Fathers of the Holy Cross who celebrate the memory of Father (Edward) Sorin (C.S.C.) and Father (Stephen T.) Badin.

Starbuck, C(harles) C.: Andover, Mass(achusetts)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

The "Tablet"'s compliment to the Ave Maria is thoroughly deserved. Starbuck hopes Father (Geo.) Tyrrell won't get into any hopeless entanglements with the Holy See. He supposes there is more danger as Pius X is rather holy than wide-seeing.

S(eton) Archbishop R(obert): Rome, Italy
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

Today is Holy Saturday and he has just come back from St. Peter's. Rome will always be the City of God on earth for a Catholic. He went to St. Peter's the afternoon of the Holy Saturday on which he was ordained priest by Cardinal Patrizsi the Cardinal Vicar of Pius IX in St. John Lateran in 1865-forty-one years ago. He speaks of his health and describes his apartment. He had to spend $500.00 before he got settled. Giuseppe is living there with his wife and infant. Archbishop (John) Ireland is at the Hotel Minerva; the more Seton sees of him the more he likes him. He is to pontificate at the American College tomorrow.

Howard, T(imothy) E.: South Bend, Ind(iana)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He learned long ago to have implicit confidence in Hudson's judgment and asks Hudson whether the enclosed is worthy of the occasion (no enclosure). Howard was present when Father (Edward F.) Sorin, (C.S.C.) stood on the altar steps and said "If it were all gone, I should not give up." (On the back of the letter is written): Great Fire 1879.

Agius, O.S.B., Archbishop A. Ambrose: Manila, (Philippine Islands)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson's last paragraph in the "News & Notes" section of the Ave Maria for Dec(ember) 16, 1905 still rings in Agius' ears. He wishes he could get a hold of these places in the States where there are "priests to spare and money to burn". From the enclosed letters Hudson will learn about affairs there. God will reward Hudson for anything he can do to help. He sends his regards to Father (John A.) Zahm and all the Fathers at Notre Dame.

 Enclosure:

1906 Apr. 10
Rooker, Bishop F(rederick) Z.: Jaro, (Philippine Islands)
to Monsignor A. A(mbrose) Agius, O.S.B. Apostolic Delegate: Manila, Philippine Islands

Rooker has received the copy of the letter of Father (Joseph) Freri, general director of the society for the Propagation of the Faith in New York. Rooker is pleased to know that some interest has been excited in America over the situation of the Church in the Philippine Islands. Rooker can give work to all the priests Freri can send him, provided they are of an absolutely superior type, and young enough to be able to learn the native language. A(gius, O.S.B.), Archbishop A. A(mbrose) Ap(ostolic) Del(egate): Manila, Philippine Islands
 to Reverend J(oseph) Freri, Director:
Society of the PropagationNew York, (New York)

Father ( ) Finegan has informed Freri that he was awaiting replies from the Bishops before answering Freri's letter of Feb. 20. Bishop (Thomas A.) Hendrick of Cebu is quoted as saying that they need priests badly and have more than sixty parishes vacant. They are not Aglipayanos or disturburs but pius people. There are 300,000 people without ministrations in the diocese. Hendrick suggests that they ask for reduced rates from James J. Hill of the Northern Pacific Company. Archbishop (John) Ireland would be the one to approach Hill. He suggests also an appeal to Marquis de Comillas, owner of the Tabaclera Company. Bishop (Frederick) Rooker of Jaro is quoted as saying that another priest has died. Two-thirds of the parishes are absolutely abandoned. Bishop (Denis J.) Dougherty of Nueva Segovia is quoted as begging for priests for the provinces of Nueva Viscaya and Lepanto-Bontoc. The only rightly ordained priest in Nueva Viscaya is an Aglipayano. This state of affairs has been going on since 1896. Agius in his visits has found whole villages pagans who begged for a missioner. Because of the isolation and trials only members of religious communities should take upon themselves the work in these missions.

Lloyd, Arthur: Tokyo, (Japan)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Lloyd has received the Ave Maria which contains Hudson's review of his poems. Many of the Japanese worship a Buddha named Amita whose life and work bear some resemblance to the story of Christ. Will it be possible to show that when a pious Japanese worships Amita he is, though ignorantly, worshipping Christ? Lloyd is getting his Japanese and Christian friends to group all available knowledge on Amita and early Christian Missions in Apostolic times to see if there is a connection. Lloyd asks if Hudson has a judicious bookworm among his friends who would hunt up any records of the earliest preachings of Christ in Central Asia and India.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): San Jose, Cal(ifornia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard is alive and well, although hundreds have died in San Jose, in San Francisco and elsewhere. Stoddard was in San Francisco during Holy Week with his sister, niece and nephew, who left for Europe on Holy Saturday. On Wednesday morning it happened. Of the two hundred souls in the Sanitorium not one was injured, but the building is in a state of collapse. The railroad to Monterey is impassable, and the "Sunset Magazine" plant is gone. The rest of his family is alive.

Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Since Hudson would not publish "Vera's Charge" in book form, she had to let Herder have it. She only got $300 for the book, and simply cannot afford to write for the Catholic public, unless it is for Hudson personally.

Tiernan is glad that "Vera's Charge" has proved to be satisfactory to Hudson. She has not signed any agreement with Herder, and has wired him to the effect that she has a better offer. She is delighted that Hudson will publish it, and hopes that he many not lose money in doing so.

Goveas, Father Antony: Mandalay, (Burma)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The reply from the physician in Calcutta with regard to the treatment of leprosy has come. In a letter from a European of Calcutta whose son is a leper in the Wesleyan Home hardby, they were told that on payment of travelling allowances the physician would treat gratis. At the end of two months payment must be guaranteed for medicines. For future months medicines must be paid in advance. All the patients, 6 Eurasians besides other natives, are too poor to afford this.
