(Schmidt), Oscar: San Antonio, Tex(as)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

This is a quaint old mission. He wishes Edwards were there with him to enjoy the grand climate. His chest is still bothering him, but he hopes to get well this year. Will Maxley was there; he understands that he is in bad shape.

(O'Sullivan), Father Timoth(y D.): (Chicago, Illinois)
to Father S(tanislaus) Fitte, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He is delighted to learn Fitte is improving, and is glad Prof. (James F.) Edwards is himself again. Poor Carton! When a young man Carton was known for his brightness and activity, R.I.P. Father Dan Riordan preached at his funeral. The Bicycle woman is preparing a lecture for her literary Club. Father Trainor now does all the preaching and is much admired. Had he a course in elocution, and could he get a doctor to fix his peculiar pronunciation, and were he rid of his Irish and Scotch brogue he would be a good speaker. Trainor is bringing Mr. Keeran of Buffalo tonight; he expects to get money to build a church from this man who has loaned large sums to Catholics.

to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard is sending Hudson "Summer Rest." He is very interested in the autobiography and calls this section of it "The Confessions of a Reformed Poet." In Drake's "Catalogue of Choice and Rare Books and Autographs" Number 12-1907, there is a copy of Stoddard's "Poems" with an inscription and a letter dated Sept(ember) 9, 1867 and is quoted at eleven dollars and seventy five cents. Stoddard wonders who the friends responsible for this is. A lady in Boston used to buy all his autograph letters advertised.

Raupert, J. Godfrey: Rome, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson has probably heard of the great development in the sphere of psychical science lately. Sir Oliver Lodge has made the statement that the dead are beyond all doubts communicating. As a consequence spiritism is increasing and numbers of Catholics are being swept away. In Italy the spiritists are at work. An accurate knowledge of all the facts of the case on the part of both clergy and laity is the best anti-dote for this growing evil. Raupert is in Rome to take counsel with the authorities. He has been in consultation with Cardinal Mery del Val and has had a private audience with the Pope. As a consequence Raupert has abandoned his literary work in London and will go to America next month to combat the growing evil. The chief desire is the accurate instruction of those preparing for the priesthood in this matter. Raupert will go to Germany for a few weeks' rest before sailing for America, and will come to Notre Dame.

(Schmidt?), Oscar: Cleveland, (Ohio)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He knows Edwards thinks he is a regular outlaw for not informing him. Mrs. (GraceS.) Fish of course told him about the N.Y. trip. He expects to be in South Bend Thursday purposely to see Edwards. Mrs. Fish wants Edwards to spend a day or so at her house— they would have a dandy visit. Anna Wame link is very much married — she has four "kids". The Bailey boys send their best.

Sadlier, Anna T.: (Montreal, Canada)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Would Hudson kindly send two copies of the "Ave Maria" containing the sketch of Sir William (Hingston) to the address given. His sister-in-law, Mrs. McCarthy, asked Sadlier to procure them. Sadlier received three letters commending the sketch, one from a Jesuit father, one from his sister-in-law, and the other from his daughter, Aileen. Sir William was a very old friend of the family. Dr. Hingston was their physician and was one of the chief promoters of the testimonial to Sadlier's late mother (Mary Anne Sadlier). At her mother's request, he replied for her on the occasion of the presentation of the Laetare Medal. It seemed fitting that Sadlier should offer such a tribute. She was sorry one or two points had to be omitted, especially the funeral at St. Patrick's.

Frawley, Henry: Deadwood, South Dakota
to James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

He received Edwards' letter of the 15instant, with the statement of Dr. John L. Gish. He sends a draft on the First National Bank of New York to pay the bill and the remainder for clothes for his sons. He promised them the amount each year as long as they did not taste alcoholic drinks in any shape or form. He further instructs Edwards.

Hickey, Emily: London, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hickey is sending Hudson the sheets of her first volume of poems-there have been four since. Hudson may use any of them for the Ave Maria. Could Hudson's press bring out a volume of selections from her poems or a volume of "Aftermath"?

Claypool, John W.: Indianapolis, Ind(iana)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

Edwards will please find an affidavit which if it states the truth, he will be glad if Edwards will sign it before a Notary. Mr. (George) Rhodius' condition is very bad. Dr. Kimberlain was alarmed about him for a time. He is anxious to have this thing at an end and a permanent guardian for George to the end that they may get rid of this vile woman. (Note: The affidavit, singed by Edwards and Brother Albeus, (C.S.C.) Notary Public stating that Edwards knows Rhodius, was with him in January, and that he (Rhodius) was nothing more nor less than an imbecile, incapable of transacting business at that time.)

 to J(ames F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

They got home all o.k. last evening with Adolph (Moritz) who had a good nights rest. He will call the Doctor for him this morning. They arrived in a snow storm, so it is good not to have waited for the night train. He thanks Edwards for his kind attention.

Gish, Anna (J.): South Bend, Indiana
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana

He has planned to have Edwards come to dinner with them Sunday. Edwards' regrets to Dr. Gish makes her think that Edwards is waiting to entertain them at the College after Easter. That is kind, but asks if he won't reconsider the invitation for Sunday and come.

(1907 Mar. 21)
(Edwards, James F.: Notre Dame, Indiana)
to (John W. Claypool: Indianapolis, Indiana)

He begs Claypool not to draw him into this terrible mixup. Many at Notre Dame do not care to have the school mentioned in connection with their friend (George Rhodius). He was connected with the preparatory school, but never entered college. The poor boy fell into bad hands after he left Notre Dame. His mother asked Edwards not to appear against George. Should George hear that he had testified that he was an imbecile George would conceive a violent hatred for Edwards. Time and time again George told him he would never marry that woman. Edwards discusses his advice to Rhodius. Edwards has signed the affidavit for Claypool alone. Should Rhodius appear in any court especially in the afternoon, he would be declared unfit to conduct affairs. (Note: This ms. in Edwards' handwriting bears no date or name.)

Agius (O.S.B.), Archbishop A. Ambrose: Manila, (Philippine Islands)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Father Zaro's success in obtaining 42 places for Filipino students in American seminaries is very encouraging. The Mill Hill Fathers are doing admirable work in the Diocese of Jaro. Two other Missionary Societies have accepted work in the Philippines-one is destined to Bishop (Denis J.) Dougherty's diocese and the other to the diocese of Cebu. As soon as the government pays for the war damages Agius hopes they can begin to turn the tide. It hurts Agius to see the progress the Protestants are making.

Claypool, John W.: Indianapolis, Ind(iana)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

Edwards' letter and the affidavit received. In view of Edwards' request not to use it he will not unless Edwards gives consent. Dr. Kinberlain is taking a decided interest in this matter. He told Mr. Hugg, the guardian, about Edwards and Jugg may insist on having Edwards' disposition. He will try to keep Edwards in the background.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Monterey, Calif(ornia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard thanks Hudson for the $25, and wonders if Hudson will like his "Summer Rest." Stoddard's bit of autobiography approaches completion, and he hopes Robertson of S(an) F(rancisco) will feel like bringing it out in a little book. "The Court of Last Appeals" contains the autograph letters and will fill three of Hudson's weekly installments. Hudson's letter is a month and a day old and in it Hudson says he must write at length to Stoddard concerning "The Lepers," yet Stoddard has heard nothing. He hopes Hudson is not ill. Stoddard's neighbor, John Maguire, a well known actor in California, was buried yesterday from their little church.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Monterey, Calif(ornia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard asks Hudson's advice on the requests made from various Catholic sources asking for gratuitous contributions-an article, or a book or money. The latest one is from Fort Dodge, Iowa containing a request for a contribution to a Bazaar for the benefit of the Church of the Sacred Heart. While Stoddard was writing he thought of two incidents: "Pearl Hunting in the Pomotous" was published in The Galaxy and never paid for. "A Tropical Sequence" was paid for and lay unpublished in the office of the "Atlantic Monthly" for seven years!

(Wattson, Reverend Lewis Thomas) Paul James Francis, S.A.: Graymoor, New York
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Wattson has received "Essentials and Nonessentials" and has given it to their reviewer for notice in the May "Lamp." Wattson sends a prospectus of "The Prince of the Apostles" which he hopes Hudson will give a good send off too. The greater success which attends the appearance of this book the more it will aid the Anglican movement toward the center of Unity. Wattson also sends a circular letter that he is sending out with the prospectus to some of the Catholic clergy. Realising rather keenly the vulnerable points of Anglicanism Wattson thinks he understands Hudson's difficulty of always telling them the truth in love.

He expects to send a stock of medicine and thanks Edwards for the Ave Maria and Scholastic. The gentleman Edwards mentions spent one year as a student at Harvard (University). He was removed as a sub-master of a grammar school.
