O'Shea, John D.: Mt. Clemens, Mich(igan)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He was delighted to receive Edwards' kind remembrances. Mary and himself took a look at those of Pius the ninth and put them away from the gaze of profance eyes. He is sending a letter returned to him. The Augustinian stated that Father (Andrew) Morrissey (C.S.C.) was to preach at the rededication of St. Augustine's Church, Kalamazoo on last Sunday.

Frawley, Henry: Deadwood, South Dakota
 to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

They have concluded to keep their boys at home this year. William (J. Frawley) and his Mother had an accident with the driving team and were both injured in July. They thought it was better to keep him where they could watch him so that prompt action could be taken if he should be more seriously injured than they know of. They are attending High School there. He feels indebted for the kindness Edwards manifested in their interest.

He appreciates everything Edwards has sent. He incloses two prescriptions for Father (Stanislaus) Fitte, (C.S.C.). The Robin is tame. He is sorry the clippings failed to reach Edwards. He tells of his sickness. Frank has been very ill. The Japanese Robin has been a source of joy to him. Frank never had anything left him after all by Mrs. Barrett, his grandmother; she has cleaned the whole thing up. She discusses Mrs. Barrett's will and asks Edwards' prayers for Frank. (Note: The prescriptions are enclosed)

Bennett, Mary E.: Wash(ington), D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Last week's Ave Maria has so admirable a criticism of her friend, Mrs. (Anna A.) Rogers' article "Why American Marriages Fail", that Bennett sent it to her to read. Rogers' husband is a naval officer and was selected by the President last year to be Paymaster General of the Navy. Hudson is asked to remember him in his prayers and also the little one whose grave is in Michigan. Hudson is no doubt familiar with Mrs. Rogers' naval stories. Bennett's husband is still at sea. Dorothy and Mrs. Bennett returned to the city about 10 days ago after being away since the middle of June. Dorothy is a very jolly girl and is a perfect tomboy.

O'Shea, John J.: (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson's kind letter puts the staff of the Catholic Standard and Times in an embarassing position. They have not wealth of thanks to meet wealth of compliment. O'Shea fears Hudson's suggestion about a Catholic daily is premature. If a daily for the promotion of Catholic interests should be started now it would be obliged to deny itself the pleasure of flying the Catholic ensign, if it contemplated achieving commercial success. But O'Shea is not rooted to this opinion and he and his colleague, Mr. Green, the managing editor, are not unprepared to face the call of duty. If Hudson is acquainted with any one who is disposed to play the part of "angel" in the matter, this is another thing.

O'Sullivan, Father T(imothy) D.: Chicago, (Illinois)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He encloses a counter-blast to the infamous Crowley's "Parochial School". That is, Dr. Lawson's attack on the Protestant Clergy whom he assuses of immorality, hypocrisy, insincerity — it is a polemical bonanza! He misses his ready with, witty, wise and interesting letters already. He was a true friend. All there send Edwards good wishes and hope that his wedding bells will ring out a joyous peal, which will appeal to hosts of friends, in the near future.!

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Monterey, Calif(ornia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Has Hudson seen a copy of "Human Life?" It contains an article by Crawford White entitled, "An Heroic Worker Among the Lepers". There is a picture of Captain Dutton in 1885 and of Brother Joseph (Ira B.) Dutton as he is after 21 years of service among the lepers. Stoddard wonders where White got his data. Dutton does not belong in the same class with Sister Gertrude who was extensively advertised shortly after her arrival in Honolulu and who married a physician.

Verdaguer, Bishop (Peter): Laredo, Tex(as)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

What Hudson said on (Abraham) Lincoln in the February 16 Ave Maria reminded Verdaguer of a thing he wished to write long ago. Verdaguer arrived with three more seminarians in New York in October, 1860, from Spain. From New York they went to Cape Girardeau to finish their studies the day Lincoln was elected. In St. Louis they were told a Catholic had been elected President. Verdaguer was ordained by Bishop (Thaddeus) Amat, December 12, 1862. When in May, 1863, he went to Los Angeles, it was told that the Vicar General, Father Blaz Naho, had told Amat that he had baptized Lincoln as an infant. In April 1905 Verdaguer went ad limina and to Spain and saw Bishop (Francis) Mora to try to find the truth. Mora said that Naho said it. Could Hudson write to see if Naho's name was in the records of the diocese?

On page 447 of the Oct. 5 Ave Maria it is stated that among the relics bequeathed to the Oxford Cathedral is a copy of the poems of Jacopone da Todi which bears his name, in his hand. Robinson has ascertained that this copy left by Hartnell de la Garde Grissell belonged to St. Philip Neri and bears his name. Robinson sends a prospectus on the new International Historical Review Archivium Francisano-Historicum. Robinson has been chosen one of the editors of the "Archivium". He expects to sail for Nap(les?) to a meeting of the editors among whom are Father Domenichelli, Lemmens, Dal Gal and other well known Franciscan scholars. Robinson hopes during his sojourn to be afforded the opportunity of completing work on the lives of St. Francis and St. Clare.

to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Maes is just home from Europe and Pittsburg, and finds Hudson's gratifying tribute to (Charles Warren) Stoddard. Maes had a glorious audience with Pius X, and a heavenly time at the Eucharistic Congress of Metz. Louvain's golden jubilee made them dream dreams of youth. Dr. French will have told Hudson that next year they will come to Notre Dame.

Onahan, William J.: Chicago, (Illinois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Onahan returned Bishop (Peter) Verdaguer's letter. It is an old story. In conversation with Archbishop Riordan, Onahan told him of the letter. Riordan reminded Onahan that Father (Irenaeus) St. Cyr, the first pastor of the first church in Chicago, 1833, had always claimed that (Abraham) Lincoln had been baptised. St. Cyr knew Lincoln's father. Riordan will acquaint Hudson with the details of this when he visits Notre Dame on his return from the East. Onahan also recalls hearing that Lincoln was baptised later in his life during the Black Hawk War. Onahan has never had any admiration for Lincoln. He is sending Hudson the Southern book "The True Lincoln."

to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

A bad cold was responsible for his neglect. He discusses the volumes of Catholic World that they need to complete their set, and tells Edwards of some magazines he is sending to be used for exchange. He just read a letter of Father (Edward) Sorin, (C.S.C.) which he came across in an old volume. of the Annals of the Propagation of the Faith, vol. 8, of 1845. The letter is valuable and most interesting. (Note: A page or pages of this letter are missing.)

Hayes, Jos(eph) M.: St. Louis, (Missouri)
to James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

He wishes to thank Edwards for the favor of the 28th. He took the liberty of sending Magnor a copy of the same. By aiding Magnor to establish a proper character and to remain at Notre Dame, Edwards will be doing him a great service. Everything depends upon Magnor (Hayes) staying. He encloses a copy of the letter to Magnor.

He had no reply from Magnor to his letter. He wrote to Professor Edwards. All subterfuge is quickly uncovered. Nothing but the truth will last longer than a day in the affairs of life. It is high time he forms a purpose of strict integrity and truthfulness not only for school but because Magnor is the sole beneficiary. He is waiting for a report. (Note: This is a carbon copy)

Bennett, Mary E.: Washington, (District of Columbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

(Anna A.) Rogers appreciates Hudson's second tribute to her in his letter. Bennett encloses Rogers' letter. Bennett will sail to Italy for the winter with Dorothy. They will settle either in Florence or Rome. Bennett's husband will be at sea for 90 days. Mother, Aunt Nell, Dorothy and all at home join in regards to Hudson.

 Enclosure:

(1907?)
Rogers, Anna A.: Washington, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to M(ary) E. Bennett: (Washington, District of Columbia)

How kind Bennett is to let Rogers read Father Hudson's letter. May she keep it till Eustace comes? She has discovered that General Duvall is directly opposite them so she doesn't feel lonely. Bennett (adds in a note that) Rogers asks permission to put Hudson's letter in her scrap book.

O'Connell, Father J(ohn) T.: Toledo, (Ohio)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He is sorry to be late in acknowledging Edwards' remittance of $20. for pew rent and Masses for his good Mother. When he returned from the Retreat he found that the venerable lady had been called to her reward and the funeral services over. It is not pleasant to see the pioneers of Catholicity in Toledo dropping away. Thomas died yesterday.
