Sauvage, C.S.C., Father G(eorge) M.: Brookland, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sauvage finds so much of his thought and himself in Cardinal (John Henry) Newman. The great mistake to Sauvage's mind is to judge Newman by one or the other of his principles or ideas taken apart from its place in his thought and from his personality. Huxley, Sauvage thinks, said that he could extract from Newman's works a treaty of scepticism. Huxley would take the words and leave the sense.

(Egan), M(aurice Francis): (Copenhagen, Denmark)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

At the Christmas dinner Hudson's health was given by Patrice, and Father (J.W.) Malaney's by Carmel. They miss Elmer Murphy, though their home is crowded by young people, all Catholics. Joe Murphy has pulled The New Century out of debt, but Egan is not pleased with his going into the publishing business. Campbell holds on to the job business in spite of Egan's advice, and had to let it devour itself. If the (Catholic) Mirror and the New Century would unite, it would be a good thing, as Hudson suggested. Egan is off to New York to visit the Gilders. The new Archbishop is the most charming man Egan ever met. Dunwoodie is a monument worthy of a saint, which Archbishop (Michael Augustine) Corrigan might have been. Woodrow Wilson, at Princeton, is a fine fellow and Egan will give him a letter to Hudson.
