Howe, Frances R.: St. Catharine, K(entuck)y
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Howe has kept leaflets for herself and Emma (Bockman?), now Mrs. Houston of Los Angeles. Next Sunday will be the 29th anniversary of Rose's death. Howe ardently desires the restoration of Lady Day to the list of solemn festivals as a reparation for the evils and blasphemies of those Catholics who belittle the mystery of the Incarnation by dwelling unduly upon the human nature of Our Lord.

Maes, Bishop Camillus P(aul): Covington, K(entuck)y
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Maes thanks Hudson for the $35.25 for the exiled French religious. Maes will forward it to Belgium. Maes has just returned from the dedication of Holy Rosary Church, Detroit, Michigan. Its zealous pastor, Father (Francis J.) Antwerp is doing wonders for the Holy Faith. Maes looks forward to seeing Hudson during Easter Week at the Extension meeting. If Hudson is there Maes will accompany him to Notre Dame, for a day or two.

Daly, Tho(ma)s A.: Philad(elphi)a, (Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Daly thanks Hudson for the generous words in the Ave Maria some months ago commending some verses of his. Hudson's letter to the Catholic Standard and Times last fall and to Mr. O'Shea created quite a flutter because Hudson spoke so handsomely of their paper.

Smith, Walter M.: Madison, Wisconsin
 to Librarian: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

The Library of the University of Wisconsin failed to receive a copy of the catalogue of Notre Dame University, it would oblige them if they received a copy for their files.

1908 Apr. 3
(Wattson, Reverend Lewis Thomas), Paul James Francis, S.A.: Garrison, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Paul thanks Hudson for the cordial review of the "Prince of the Apostles." Paul often feels that his good friends on Hudson's side of the "ditch", as Dr. Lloyd calls it, overestimate the book itself and underestimate the power and possibility of the movement, Corporate Communion, for which it stands. Paul notes a more hopeful view among later writers in the Catholic press especially recent articles in the "Month," "Tablet," and "Ecclesiastical Review." Paul wonders why Hudson insists on the hopelessness of the movement. How can Hudson be sure that Rome will not compromise in matters of discipline? Hudson is taking ground that two of the Church's most illustrious Bishops did not take in a private conversation that Paul had with them.

Connor, A. F.: Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: Toledo, Ohio

They saw Archbishop (Robert) Seton last week; she finds him very much aged and his memory very poor. She hopes Edwards' health is improved. She is enjoying Rome and Naples was charming.

Loughead, Flora Haines: Alma, California
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

1908 Apr. 5
Evers, Father L(uke) J.: New York, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

When Evers was at Notre Dame, Father Carrier used to tell them how the wind blows seeds from the dried and dead flowers for miles and deposits them here and there. A nun from Newfoundland wrote and asked Evers to find her father. Evers found him in one of those lodging houses among some 150 lodgers. At the lodging house he heard the confessions of two other dying men - one of Father Carrier's wind blown seeds. Blown from the Ave Maria office to Newfoundland and then to the lodgings on the Bowery.

Dutton, (Ira B.) Joseph: Molokai, Hawaii(an Islands)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

It is a long time since any request has been made for a piece of Father (Joseph) Damien (de Veuster SS.CC.)'s habit. Dutton thinks it would be well for the remaining portion now in his hands to be put with Hudson's other Molokai souvenirs. The remnant is authentic. Father Wendelin (Moellers, SS.CC.) agreed that Dutton should keep the cape part of one habit before the effects were sent to Louvain.

Smith, J. Francis: Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Toledo, Ohio)

He called on the Cardinal and he went through the palace and saw the paintings. The Cardinal's secretary took him to Professor Frenguelli who showed him the work he was doing for Edwards. Mrs. Smith and Sinclair returned to America. He leaves Rome soon. His friends say he is getting better; surely he is faster. He encloses a letter to help get the picture through the custom people.

McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J(oseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

McQuaid is touched by Hudson's interest in the success of St. Bernard's. Dr. Smith's book on Seminaries will appear in April. McQuaid wrote an additional chapter for it. The Apostolic Delegate will perform the dedication services. No one here now talks of Father (Andrew E.) Breen. He has lost a host of friends and gained no new ones. The action of the Propaganda in January was to drop the (Father Edward J.) Hanna affair for six months. McQuaid will be in New York for one day only during the Centenary Celebration.

O'Brien, Father Frank A.: Kalamazoo, Michigan
 to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Father (James J.) French was to have his choice of two sets of encyclopedias from the Father (Peter A.) Baart books; he knows Edwards will be glad to give him his selection. O'Brien has secured for Edwards a copy of all the documents of the Dunwoodie Seminary trouble. It must be sealed for twenty-five year.

1908 Apr. 10
Berlioz, Bishop A(lexander): Sendai, Japan
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Their generous benefactor will have their prayers. Berlioz has come to Sendai for the ceremony of the Holy Oils. After a few Confirmation trips he will return to Hakodate until "aedificentur muri Jerusalem". He is sending Hudson a small facsimile of an edict, 1868, proscribing Christianity. They regret that Hudson's Congregation was not able to open a house at Sendai. Berlioz has asked for Christian Brothers, but it has not been granted. Twelve Sisters of the Sacred Heart have just come to buy 10 hectares of land in Tokyo.

1908 Apr. 12
Conrardy, Father L(ambert) L.: S.S. Asia
to Brother J. (Ira B.) Dutton: (Molokai, Hawaiian Islands)

Conrardy was furnished transportation to Hong Kong and permission was not granted to him to stop over at Honolulu. In all his travels his stay at the Leper Home in Louisiana have been his happiest days. The next has been in Duluth with the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, O.S.B. Molokai is a little paradise compared to how it will be in China among the lepers. When Father (Joseph) Damien (deVeuster SS.CC.) went to Molokai in 1873 it was a hell. The Hawaiian character is vastly superior to that of the Chinese. Bishop (Jean-Marie) Merel of Canton wanted everything Chinese. Father Damien was free to act as he thought best. Conrardy understands the settlement had improved very much since he left. Conrardy is not in favor of what is called Modernism but he is not a Formalist. That is why he did what he did at Molokai. He always has the people say the prayers of the Mass literally translated in their language.

Dean, Herbert S.: Reigate, England
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Dean has just sent some manuscripts. One is a sketch of Catholic Social work going on in England. The founder of this work is Norman J. Potter. The other is just a few lines on the new British Cabinet. Hudson will be sorry to hear that things are very bad with Father (George) Tyrrell (S.J.). He seems to have lost all hold on things, and quite frankly says he does not know what he believes.

1908 (Apr. 20)
(Egan), M(aurice Francis): (Copenhagen, Denmark)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Egan must be in trim to meet the King and Queen of England tomorrow night. Yesterday Hudson would have been delighted by the piety of the diplomatic corps. The Count and Countess de Beaucaire are very devout. The Baroness de Grooth is a daughter of Violet Fane. Mrs. Egan is very happy, particularly as Gerald is doing so well as Mr. Hill's second as Washington correspondent in the New York Tribune. Neill admires him very much. It is very interesting to be the first Catholic American Minister to Denmark where lately Catholics were proscribed. Egan likes this job, it suits him. Mrs. Roosevelt has just sent him a statue of St. Roger. Egan will get free passage for Hudson if he can come over for Patricia's wedding. Egan's sister's death was hard on him. The C.A.U. has lost two suits. Egan is sure the Cardinal will raise the money but the government of the C(atholic) U(niversity) ought to be changed. It should not allowed to fail.

Fish, Grace S.: Paris, (France)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

She thanks Edwards for the two steamer letters. She thinks the French line is really the best for good food and service. Miss Kirby was with her and a very good companion. She has Frederick there spending Easter. She will soon go to call upon the Huffers. Remembrances to Father Hudson.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Monterey, Calif(ornia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard can do nothing with the proof, not even read it. Turner has closed out his place of business and is now with Small, Maynard & Co, Boston. They publish "The Island of Tranquil Delights." Stoddard was never so bored.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Monterey, Calif(ornia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

"The Tumbler" is enchanting and has done Stoddard good. Sometimes he feels like entering a monastery - Santa Barbara if they would take him as a lay brother. A Danish Magazine "Varden" is publishing selections from "South Sea Idyls." Stoddard is sorry for Professor (James) Edwards.

1908 Apr. 25
Atteridge, A. Hilliard: (London), England
to Father Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

There are now three convents instead of four at Isleworth. Their parish priest told him that he would rather any other community had gone, the Carmelites did so much good with all their hidden life. The Anglican curate used to come to tell the Reverend Mother all his difficulties. Atteridge is sure that if the curate were not married he would come over at once. Atteridge is writing a little book on the story of Catholicity here to be used locally for propaganda purposes. The pamphlet will gain here by being anonymous. There is a real movement of conversions here. They have a marvellously energetic parochus, an ideal priest, himself a convert, with pleasant manners and winning ways. Atteridges encloses some items of literary news on a separate sheet (no enclosure). Miss Stone, the authoress of "Mary Tudor" is slowly dying of a painful illness. She is an old friend of Atteridge's sister.

Guiney, Louise I(mogen): Falmouth, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Maes, Bishop Camillus P(aul): Covington, K(entuck)y
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Too much work obliges Maes to renounce going to New York. The remembrance of his short visit to Notre Dame abides with him and comforts him. Maes reached Chicago Friday night. At home the first greeting was the telegram of Father (John W.) Cavanaugh (C.S.C.) telling him that N(otre) D(ame) U(niversity) is holding its own.

Fanning, M( ) A.: Cleveland, (Ohio)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Indiana

Fanning has written D'Arcy to make it a point to call on Hudson and he is sending his oldest girl to Notre Dame to help him fix up his room in Corby Hall. Fanning suggests that Hudson say something in the Ave Maria about the articles on social subjects that the Catholic Universe of this city is publishing. Fanning intends to follow Hudson's suggestion of bringing the articles together in book form when he has finished them.
