The wooden cross with chain belonged to Bishop (Frederick) Baraga. Father Sieffrath showed the Bishop a cross he had just purchased. When the Bishop took a fancy to the cross, they exchanged crosses and Father Sieffrath wore Baraga's cross constantly during his life. He gave it to O' Brien before his death.

Brownson's wife is thinking of sending Dr. J. Gairdner's work on Lollardy to her daughter at Eden Hall for Christmas, and asks him to get the title, publisher, and price from Hudson. Isn't the salutation "so long" a corruption of the Hebraic "Salem, Arabic "Salaam"?

He refers to Cardinal Baronius and Jesuit Cardinal Bellarmine who agreed with Maistre. More than 30 consecutive popes! He asks about the Apostolic Succession and more information on request. All is from R(oman) C(atholic) sources. (Note: Clipping is attached. In James Farnham Edwards Collection)

Atteridge, A. Hilliard: (London, England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Atteridge sends another article which he hopes Hudson will like. If Hudson publishes it please use the initials as a "nom-de-guerre". Atteridge could have strengthened the negative side of his case if he had alluded to the Roman scandals of the past, but this he has avoided. The more he reads history the more he is thankful for today.

O'Brien, Father Frank A.: Kalamazoo, Michigan
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

The silver cross and chain was given by Bishop (Joseph) Rosati to Bishop (John) Lefevre (de Cheverus) at the time of his consecration. His early photographs show that he wore this cross. It remained in the Diocesan treasury at Detroit until 1877 when Bishop (Casper Henry) Borgess gave it to O'Brien. The chain was longer, but a watch chain was taken from it and its whereabouts is now unknown. Bishop Lefevre said that the cross belonged to a saintly Bishop.

Teasie and he left for Chicago and Mr. and Mrs. Fish came over on Tuesday and put in a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Fish are the dandiest people ever. Edwards may expect a picture in a day or two.

Christitch, E(lisabeth O'Brien): Belgrade, (Serbia)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson is aware of the troublous times in these regions which have kept her so busy. She worked steadily for the Express, but got nothing extra while Lieutenant Woods, military correspondent who had all army details from her, got 5 guineas. She also translated a good deal for the Times correspondent, and at the Legation. Annie is doing well, and has the idea of taking Janie to London. Nicola is in Turin and going on well. Before he left he got formally engaged.

1908 Dec. 14
(Egan), M(aurice Francis): (Copenhagen, Denmark)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Egan is pleased at the news of Hudson's recovery. He has taken to riding. Egan used to go to the golf course with Alan Johnstone every day, but it is a long way off. Notre Dame suited him better. The work of the Ave Maria must be prodigious. The Jorgensen paper awaits the typewriter. Egan is puzzled about the C(atholic) U(niversity of) A(merica) and would like to have a long talk with Hudson on this matter. They probably would disagree. He would like Hudson to examine the condition of things; his Congregation has an immense interest in it. Their representative at the Catholic University ought to have a voice in the Senate, which Egan presumes will regain some of its power, if the present Rector goes. It was quite possible to conduct Catholic University on just graduate lines. Egan stood against the undergraduate movement until the very last. Egan tried his best but Hudson has too much at stake in the Catholic University to let it fail. The University of Copenhagen is admirably conducted. Jorgensen will go to Harvard in the professorial exchange they have arranged. The professors, headed by the Rector Magnificus all turned out for the wedding of Marie, Mrs. Jerome Elmer Murphy, who lives in Washington, D.C. Hudson's friend Carmel is a tall, slim young person. Hudson should not believe anything about his plans until Egan tells him. He would like to stay there. He is not (going?) to Columbia. Weed, Oliver's representative, had tea with then. The skull is that of Pope St. Lucian.

to James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

He takes the greatest pleasure in addressing Edwards to enclose the address of Mac. Burney's Medicine, which, he is satisfied will completely restore Edwards to his former good health. He was saved and restored to perfect health by the use of this medicine in lieu of a serious malady.

Hsieh, F(rancis) X(avier): Wei Hai Wei, China
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Enclosed Hudson will find Christmas cards for Hudson, Brother Valerian and Father Finn. Hsieh visited Shanghai to secure the consent of his father-in-law to annul the matrimonial contract but it was not a success. He saw Father Rosi who baptized him at Shanghai. He also visited the college of St. Francis Xavier and saw several Marist Brothers. Hsieh also visited the central home of the Jesuit Fathers at Zi-Ka-Wei where Richard's Geography was composed and printed. The Jesuits have been done much by way of keeping up the standard of Chinese Catholic literature.

1908 Dec. 19
Seton, Archbishop Robert: Rome, Italy
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

He received Edwards' letter and a report sent to him by Bishop (Denis) O'Connell of the Catholic University (of America); both interested him. He never expected to live so long; he wouldn't have given up parish work had he known; he feels he is living a useless life, wasting the last years of his life. He would return to America at once if he were assured of a Chaplaincy in some Catholic institution. He is hopeful for news from the City of N(ew) J(ersey) about his mother's estate. He asks Edwards to say no more about intentions from him; it is humiliating and undignified. He would like to help the Catholic University, but he is too poor. He has drawn up a statement for his nephew for use after the inevitable. He has instructed him to communicate with Professor Edwards or the one in charge of Bishops' Memorial Hall about the disposition of his clerical property. He lists the things he has and some of the places where he got them. The Seton estate was lamentably managed in an unbusinesslike way by William Seton and the agents. He must warn Edwards that Thomas Seton Jevons who hopes to rebuild the family was put out by the dispersion of the family heirlooms. He will do what he can about the Greek mitre. He wishes he could visit Notre Dame and talk to the Minims. One lady remarked in his congregation that Seton never gave a sermon, but that the people learned something. He had an interesting talk with Bishop (Edward P.) Allen of Mobile. He wishes everyone a Happy New Year.

Cleary, Father Henry W.: Dunedin, New Zealand
to  (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Cleary, editor of the N(ew) Z(ealand) Tablet, sends an article dealing with a spiritistic phenomenon (not enclosed) which seems to have made an impression on Hudson. Hudson will find a lengthy leader on the subject of Spiritism in the New Zealand Tablet of December 17. If Cleary had two hours' conversation and "demonstration" with (John Godfrey) Raupert, he thinks he could safely guarantee pretty substantial modifications of large classes of statements that Raupert has made in regard to the phenomena of spiritism.

Vaughan, Father John S(tephen): Rome, Italy
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Vaughan hopes his "Dangers" will be out well before Lent. Benziger does not like "How I Came to do It" and wants Vaughan to cancel the contract. Vaughan refuses. Burns and Oates have sold some 300 copies in England and Benziger is keeping his 250 copies locked up. There are two opposite opinions about the book. Some are delighted with it, others, shocked or horrified. Vaughan is preaching on all Sundays until Lent when Father (Robert Hugh) Benson comes. "Cath(olic) Book Notes" of London is under (James) Britten who has never said a good word for any Book Vaughan has ever written.

(Myers), Geo(rge W. ): Dubuque, Iowa
to Ja(me)s F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

He received Edwards' greeting card with real pleasure. He is very busy, and his correspondence suffers. He has been blessed with a devoted wife and two beautiful children, Barbeau and Ester. He is glad Edwards is improving. All are well again. D. (Myers) is prospering and is still "on the water wagon." Loui(s) Nash is operating the Street Ry. Co. at Omaha and has it on a better basis than it ever was before.

S(eton), Archbishop R(obert): Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He dined at the English College; he sends Edwards the invitation — someone may look at it a hundred years from now. He knows absolutely nothing of the Catholic Extension Congress in Chicago that Edwards writes of. Freeman's Journal is so largely taken up with abuse of England that he gets little from it. Archbishop (John) Ireland came to see him and Seton did most of the talking for an hour. He told of the diminishing prestige of the episcopate in the United States and about himself. He could extract nothing from Ireland. He doesn't know what Ireland is doing in Rome but his supporter for the Cardinalate John Gaffney their con. Gen. at Dresden came down for a couple of days and wanted Seton to come down to a grand dinner, but he was otherwise engaged. He spoke to Ireland about (James Cardinal) Gibbons' backbone; he has allowed himself to be treated in Seton's affair with undignity. Archbishop (Patrick W.) Riordan was out-spoken enough to say that it was an outrage.
