Espy, F.M.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)
to (James F.) E(dwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

This is a manuscript poem by Rev. J. Huntington and she thinks it better be in Edwards' hands. She was to blame for the loud talking this A.M. She was so upset because Mr. (Paul R.) Byrne did not come on time that she forgot herself.

Cody, John H.: Fort Wayne, Ind(iana)
to Ja(me)s (F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He writes to apologize for the postal card he sent; a man with indigestion is at times not responsible. He tells of his illness. May 2 is their regular Sodality Sunday; in addition come their A.O.H., Tuesday February 14, 1865 he was 21 years old and initiated into the A.O.H. He has never missed that one Sunday. Ed(ward) Miller, Peru, Ind(iana) of '60 and '61 (a brother of Tho(ma)s B. Miller) Dave Fitzgibbon, Indianapolis and he are the three boys that expect to go to Notre Dame University in June. He has his knife, fork and spoon and most of his uniform of the N.D.C.C. There were 127 students in '59 and '60. The great wreck on the L.S. & M.S. between Mishawaka and South Bend occurred June, 1859.

Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tiernan seems very good at excuses, and not good for anything else. She is again to be slow in sending the manuscripts. Tiernan's cousin died last week. She was a Protestant; her daughter is on the threshold of the Church. She sends her sympathy in the death of Hudson's friend, (Charles Warren) Stoddard.

1909 May 9
Spalding, James Field: Cambridge, Mass(achusetts)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

What Hudson says about Spalding discontinuing work and getting engagements near home seems almost like some dream. No one can tell how near the end may be, but Spalding has no idea of giving up work. The little appreciation he has had has not been limited by distance from home. Spalding has seen several notices of (Georgina Pell) C(urtis)'s book, but has yet to see the book. A distinguished English convert has asked whether Spalding would tell his story, but he could not persuade Spalding. Silence is golden.

1909 May 10
Dutton, (Ira B.) Joseph: Molokai, Hawaii
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

These clippings may interest Hudson (none enclosed). The Sacred Heart Sisters in Honolulu are known as the "White Sisters" from their habit. The Herald scrap relates to the all sorts "Who's Who", not Catholic. The autobiographic habit is horrid. A straight conversion account is a little different. For that he was fixing something for (Georgina Pell) C(urtis). If any further conversion account is made and Hudson wishes to put Dutton in it he may do so. (Dutton here gives a resume of his life.)

(Monarch), Lamar: New Castle, Ind(iana)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

1909 May 10
Phillips, Charles: San Francisco, (California)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

(Charles Warren) Stoddard's death was a great shock to Phillips. He was on his way to see him Saturday morning when he received the news. Stoddard made his confession and was annointed on that Friday afternoon and died shortly after 10 p.m. The funeral was simple, Father (Ramon M.) Mestres said the requiem in the Mission of San Carlos and Father (Henry I.) Stark, C.S.P. preached. For a pillow he had a tile from Mission Carmel given him by W(illia)m(?) Spence. Stoddard left everything to his sister who is in Europe. Among his papers, Phillips found the unfinished sketch of Stoddard's days at Notre Dame, Very likely Ina Coolbrith will be chosen to edit his poetic works. Stoddard left a request that Phillips publish any biography or letters. Phillips is sending the "Monitor."

Vaughan, Father John S(tephen): Rome, (Italy)
To Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Vaughan fears his brother, Father Kenelm (Vaughan) is dying. "The Lamp" is an extraordinary production. They reprinted the whole review of his "How I Came to do it." Vaughan is thankful to find "Dangers" so well received by the American press. On May 31, he leaves for England. He has to preach all the Sundays of June at Westminster Cathedral and will be in Ireland for July to give a retreat for the clergy of Elphim. Vaughan has not seen his nephew, Father Herbert (Vaughan?) since his return from New York. What had Hudson thought of his verses "The First Pipe"? (He encloses them).

1909 May 18
Howe, Frances R.: (Chesterton, Indiana)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Howe thanks Hudson for his recent communication regarding Mr. W. She is surprised that Hudson never read Rosa von Tannenburg. Considered as a child's story it belongs to the class so heartily condemned by Maurice Francis Egan. Howe was full forty when her mother died. In a day or two she will send Hudson the copy in her possession. Howe learned recently that Rosa von Tannenburg had a granddaughter who married a Swedish nobleman and all the nobility of Sweden can trace their descent from her, who was revered as a saint. A Swedish family in Howe's employ have a crippled child and she is Howe's pupil.

1909 May 21
Seton, Archbishop (Robert): Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He would like to be with Edwards enjoying one of their talks. He has been receiving clippings about himself and his ancestry, who fought beside Joan of Arc at Orleans, Sir Thomas Seton. While he finds fashionable life there too distracting, he has given up any idea of going elsewhere. Cardinal Martinelli advised him not to move to Pisa, where his grandparents were. Edwards must have seen the bits written about him writing his recollections; clippings were sent to him. Although he confirmed two converts the other day he has not enough work to do. He is to pontificate the Solemn Mass on the feast day over the body of St. John Baptist de Rossi; on St. Philip Neri's day and the Requiem for all deceased students of the American College on June 8. Fifty years ago next December 8 is the anniversary of the opening of the American College. 120 mitred prelates were present at the canonization and papal Mass in St. Perer's yesterday.

Dougherty, Bishop D(en is) J.: Iloilo, P(hilippine) I(slands)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dougherty has received Hudson's gift of $23 and thanks him. The Bishops of the Philippines have spoken of Hudson as one of their staunch, active, and constant friends in America. Unfortunately, some highly respectable, but misinformed Catholic periodicals of the U(nited) S(tates) have confined their activities on their behalf to violent and usually groundless attacks on their government. "The Ave Maria" has been exceptionally free from this policy.

(McCarthy), Laura (F.): Omaha, (Nebraska)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

She wishes she could have remained longer and have seen everybody. She asks Edwards if he destroys her letters; she must know. (Note: Pictures of Miss Dinning, Edwards, Laura (Fenderick).  to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tiernan thanks Hudson for the tribute to her father, as well as the notice of the unveiling of their monument, and the quotation from General Young's speech. The next chapter would have been finished if she did not have to stop to write her reply to whatever will be said at the presentation of the medal next Monday. She is sorry that Father (John W.) Cavanaugh, (C.S.C.) has found it impossible to bring the medal himself and has a telegram from the President of Holy Cross College in Washington saying that he is coming with the medal.

Walsh, Ja(me)s J.: New York, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Walsh is glad Hudson liked the "Oldest Book in the World". The best of his writing the article for Hudson was that it called his attention to the method and content of juvenile education in other periods. He found a series of books on manners and morals in English printed at the end of the fourteenth century. Walsh thinks the Catholic teachers who read the Ave Maria would be interested in an article on these books. The other evening he called upon the Redemptorists up the Hudson and found they were reading his book on the Thirteenth Century in the Refectory. Over 150 Religious Communities in this country have done this. His visit to Notre Dame brought him much pleasure. The circular enclosed(no enclosure) is of a book just about to make its appearance, and if it should form an item for the Ave Maria he would be very glad.

1909 May 29
Crawford, Elizabeth Marion: (Sorrento, Italy)
to Father Daniel (E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Crawford was touched by Hudson's article in defence of her husband, (Francis Marion Crawford). Everything the papers said about his death was totally untrue. On the 9th of April he had a heart collapse and died after a brief recovery on the same day. He had decided that they all should have taken Communion with him on Easter morning. He died as he had lived, a staunch and good Catholic. He often spoke of his delightful visit to Notre Dame, the only peaceful memory of that awful lecture tour which was the cause of all his ill health. She fears for those who have been incapable of understanding the true meaning of "Casa Braccio." (Stamped envelope with the letter.)
