to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

It was decided to publish his new book privately because Father (Luke F.) Sharkey was willing to meet the expense. This arrangement they decided to keep quiet. Sharkey broke a blood vessel which may some day leave him an invalid. He has withdrawn his offer and has not been acting well. Raupert will now have to raise the money for the book is at the printers. The night before last the ciborium and its contents were stolen from their church. Raupert and Sharkey both are having restless nights. The evil power has been stirred up at this book. What can Raupert do to raise this money? Raupert sends a brief statement of that case of obsession to which he referred (no enclosure). Father Miller's letter will interest Hudson.

1909 Nov. 30
Seton, Archbishop Robert: Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

In the Bristol Hotel he was immediately recognized by the servants — a class of people who seem to like him. One servant told Seton that he gave less trouble and larger tips than others. He said Mass in the Cathedral and left on the "Caronia" for Naples. Giuseppe and his wife were glad to see Seton. He was lectured to on his love of Family by the vice-Rector of the Scotch College — a horrid young radical, and again for the use of the expression, "the lower classes". The decadence of the clergy is incredible. He takes no interest in state affairs. He is disgusted with this new Rome and hopes in another year to be back in the United States for good. It is almost unbelievable the changes that have taken place under the Italian misgovernment. Not a few converts are leaving unable to stand the coarseness, the vulgarity, the immorality and the anti-clericalness of the shockingly profaned City. He has written to his nephew, John D. Crimmins about his living in New York in almost any capacity. He has not yet approached Archbishop (John M.) Farley.
