In 1798 Lamare wrote to his provincial that because of his health and because he had come provisionally to the colony and had remained ten years he would like to retire to Havana. Knowing that in the past year the chaplain general had given orders to the governor of the province to permit him to retire, Lamare appeals to (Penalver). The governor has written to Havana for a priest; Lamare will not retire at least until the troops have made their Easter duty. He has put in 12 years of work in the colony and cannot continue because of ill health. He asks (Penalver) to declare him freed from his duties as chaplain of the 2nd Battalion of the Infantry and give him permission to retire.

The frankness of Carroll's letter of October 17, 1798, received four days ago, obliges (Penalver) to answer with the same frankness. Carroll speaks of the old practice of priests of his diocese going from one side of the Mississippi to serve parishes on the other side which is in this diocese without permission from Carroll as in the case of Father Charles Leandre Lus(s)on who is now at St. Charles, Missouri. Not speaking of incidents before (Penalver's) coming to Louisiana and in the case of (?) Father Lusson, (Penalver) declares that he gave orders to his vicar general Father Diego Maxivel (James Maxwell) in the Spanish Illinois country to admit any priest of good habits, capable and with legitimate papers and to station him in St. Charles or St. Ferdinand charging him not to be hasty in taking someone who lacked these qualifications. If Maxivel urged Lusson to abandon his parish he acted very wrongly; he only told (Penalver) that he admitted him because of his fitness and good papers. He sent to (Penalver) various documents verifying his orders, among them one from Carroll of June 13, 1797 giving him a parish in the American Illinois country and two copies of letters to Carroll dated November 15, 1797 and May 6, 1798 indicating the impossibility of remaining in this position, adding that he had his dimission which had been mislaid. This last circumstance made Penalver not revoke the appointment by Maxivel as he saw Lusson as a priest whom Carroll had placed in charge of souls. But now that Penalver knows that he did not have this permission, he is disposed to dismiss him as soon as he receives Carroll's answer and to warn his vicar general as he wishes to preserve the greatest harmony between their dioceses and he wishes his pastors to observe the greatest consideration between brothers united by the same religion. The distance from here to the Illinois country which often takes three months to go up the river and sometimes six months pass without news, obliges Penalver to entrust to others what he would do himself. Therefore he asks Carroll to tell him which priests have passed over to Louisiana so that they may be watched and give no scandal. In Natchez and Colescree(k) there are two churches in the care of Jose Vidal, Spanish consul, who, if he finds a community of Catholics he is to persuade them to take over so that the church may not be profaned. Since Penalver is nearer than Carroll to these places, if they need the holy oils, he has given Father Fran(cis)co Len(n)an, pastor of Pointe Coupee, to assist any Catholic who has no pastor in the territory of Natchez, next to New Feliciana.

Lavranyse must have news of the man to whom is addressed the enclosed letter, (no enclosure), (Silvestre Lavadie), and his two cousins who went to (Louisiana) with their father in 1792(?). One was a doctor named Abadie or Labadie, like his uncle and cousin; the other who had no determined profession was named Luis Habine(?) Solenave, Lavranyse's cousin, whom he persuaded to follow his kinsman at the beginning of the French revolution in order to save his life. Lavranyse does not know if he made use of the Latin or philosophy he had taught him, having d3estined him for the priesthood. The year after his departure Lavranyse was put out of his pastorate and country. Since then he has lived in exile in such poverty that he cannot leave unless Lavadie can send him aid. Lavranyse at 60 has rheumatism and has suffered the loss of his left eye. He has received no reply to many letters sent, therefore he has recourse to (Penalver) to beg him to see that the letter reaches its destination.

Last June, (Carroll) answered (Penalver)'s letter of April 12 but it was never sent. Therefore he recapitulates its contents. The principal subject of (Penalver)'s letter was Father (Leandre) Lusson. Lusson was at Baltimore for some months, coming from Santo Domingo, where he had a parish. He was appointed to assist in a parish not far from Baltimore. Here he was guilty of a fault which required his removal. He solicited forgiveness with much humility and was sent to Kaskaskias where his native French might be more useful. After a short stay, Lusson moved into (Penalver)'s diocese and did not obtain an exeat from (Carroll). If he behaves properly in (Penalver)'s diocese, (Carroll) is glad. He is a Franciscan Recollect. The others alluded to in (Carroll)'s last letter are Father (Michael) Barr(i)ere, French, and Father (John Maguire) McGuire from Ireland. Barrere left his parish in Kentucky many years ago. McGuire likewise accepted a mission to Kentucky and was provided with money which he used to go to Louisiana, where (Carroll) hears, he now is. (Carroll) is highly obliged to (Penalver) for his attention to the Catholics at Natchez. (Carroll) has lately appointed a pastor for them, Father Matthew O'Brien, a clergyman of great merit. Father Paul de St. Pierre has often solicited employment but as (Penalver) saw fit to dismiss him, it seemed improper to employ him. (An exact translation of the above letter into Spanish is given).

Aucoin, native of the parish of Valenzuela appeared and stated that he had asked Rosalia Landry to marry him. He asks for a dispensation asking (Penalver) to hear the testimony on these points: That he is the son of Isabel Henrry and Jose Aucoin, son of Pable Aucoin and Maria Leblanc, daughter of Margarita Boudrau and Fran(cis)co Leblanc, son of Santiago Leblanc. That Rosalia Landry is the daughter of Fran(cis)co Landry and Margarita Leblanc, daughter of Maria Melanson and Jose Leblanc, son of Maria Duga and Juan Leblanc, son of Santiago Leblanc. That his fiancee's mother is dead and her father old and infirm. Father (Isidro) Quintero notes at the beginning of the document that Aucoin appeared but did not know how to sign.
