Wallrath, M Colusa, (______)

to (James A(lphonsus) McMaster) (New York, New York)

Wallrath encloses payment of his bill. However, he still owes $25. for advertisements of the Catholic Parent's Friend, and although he desires to pay, he is unable to because of the great loss he suffered in the undertaking. He asks McMaster to reduce his bill for advertising in view of his ill success and of the fact that McMaster occasionally uses an article of Wallrath's, yet charges him in full for the Freeman's Journal.

Walsh, (Father) M.C. Macon City, M(iss)o(uri)

to James A(lphonsus) McMaster New York, (New York)

Walsh urges McMaster to go on with his good work, he has given the mind of all of them such a turn that they cannot rest satisfied in the old order of things. If his wishes were to become a reality he would die happy. Should McMaster be unable to publish Walsh's letter, which he writes on a matter that has occupied his mind along while, he should start the question himself, for the Freeman can surely carry it through. If he does publish the letter, he may alter what Walsh has said about the Doctors if he thinks it too severe. (To this is added: A letter to be published in the Freeman's Journal, wirtten by Walsh but signed "Progrediamus" in which, after praising McMaster for his fight in behalf of the establishment of parishes in America, he suggests the founding of an American National Seminary, for the spread of the faith in America necessitates real, American-trained priests. Our Americans surpass the Roman doctors, and the money sent to Rome in support of the American College could support an American Seminary

1835 (Milde), Vincent Edward Archbishop of Vienna Dec 3. Vienna, Austria

to Bishop Frederick Rese Detroit, Michigan

God who united hearts and minds in fraternal obscurity is the source of the beneficence which causes the people of Austria to unite to help their brothers through the preaching of the Gospel in America. God grant light and aid so that the money of the treasury of the Leopoldine Association be so distributed among the needy of America so as to produce the best fruits. For the needs of the diocese, the Association on Nov. 26, allotted 6,000 florins in care of the firm Arnstein & Eckels. He asks that care be given to the spending of the money; 1. that care be taken of the most needy of his own diocese alone; 2. that care be given to the needs of the missionaries, especially those in his diocese from Austria; 3. that as soon as Rese has received the money, he acknowledge the receipt in a letter in which he will give the status of the diocese. The Archbishop is forced to interpose some words about the Redemptorists living in Rese's diocese who report that they have not received the money sent to them. Since the Archbishop does not have the information necessary to decide this point he ask Rese to send him the necessary information. For the rest he begs Rese and his fellow workers to pray constantly for the benefactors of the Leopoldine Association.

(______) (______)

Weninger, S.J., (Father) F.X. (______), (______)

to (James Alphonsus McMaster) (New York, New York)

Weninger wrote in his last letter that at the mission of Mt. St. Joseph in California, he had received into the church some Freemasons. He now wishes to inform McMaster's readers how he answers the objections of the Freemasons to the act of the Church which prohibits membership in secret societies. Weninger's argument is that secret brotherhoods are are not real brotherhoods, since members single out their fellow-members from the rest of humanity, and being discriminatory and not truly charitable, the societies are really sinful and not at all Catholic.

(______) May 7,

Weninger, (Father) F.X. N(ew) Y(ork), N(ew) Y(ork)

to (James Alphonsus McMaster) (New York,New York)

Weninger did not meet McMaster in his office and as he is now leaving the city, he recommends to McMaster for recommendation his (Weninger's) reply to the Catholic Clergy of America. McMaster should call attention especially to the fact that, abstracting from Mr. Thompson's attacks, the pamphlet contains a synopsis of what all Catholics should know to repel the attacks of the Church's enemies.

White, Jno. H. (New York, New York)

to Ja(me)s A(lphonsus) McMaster (New York, New York)

The vessel leaves in a few minutes, and White writes to express regret at not seeing McMaster again. Words could not express his gratitude to McMaster and Father Gleason. Everything is dark at present, but things may be better soon, and he leaves in hope. He was sorry to hear of McMaster's illness; his own health is no better. McMaster will hear from him as soon as he lands. He sends his regards to the good Father (______).

White, Mrs. J.W. Lexington, Kentucky

to (James Alphonsus) McMaster (New York, New York)

Mrs. White asks McMaster to reply to the article she encloses, a lecture on "Bismark and the Pope", delivered by Dr. Rogers, one of the prominent men of Lexington. She knows of no one who would answer like McMaster, whom she knows well through the late (Father) E.McMahon and through the agent, (Maurice Francis) Egan. Many people in Lexington and Frankfort have wished that she would make this request of McMaster, for both places are full of prejudice against (McMaster's and her) religion and nation.

Whitman, Sarah Providence, (Rhode Island)

to Orestes A. Brownson

Whitman would like to introduce Charles Greene, an ardent admirer of Brownson. Greene would like to have an interview. Greene is an artist; in the past the subject of his paintings has been portrait painting in small towns and villages. Greene would have applied to Miss (Anne C.) Lynch for an introduction to Brownson had she not been passing the season in Philadelphia. Whitman says Miss Lynch wrote a notice of the "Mechanic" by F.H. Whipple for Brownson's Journal. Miss Whipple is now Mrs. Charles Greene.

(Whitman, Mrs. Sarah H.) Providence, (Rhode Island)

to O(restes) A. Brownson Chelsea, Massachusetts

Mrs. Whitman received Brownson's letter. She has been ill with an organic disease of the heart but has no fear of death. Her only regret is that the illness deprives her of any body or mental exertion. Because of this condition,Mrs. Whitman will be unable to write for Brownson. If she does write, however, Brownson will get it. She has thought of writing a Review of Richter's Titan and Flegel Jahre. Mrs. Whitman had hoped Brownson would have visited them. Brownson and his Review are held in high respect. An example is cited to prove her point. Dr. Wayland is watching the public opinion and has denounced Brownson. Dr.(Francis) Wayland's boast of having acknowledged his povery is absurd. She claims Brownson has answered him sufficiently. Her opinion of the Poetry of the Dial is not good. Her answer is contained in an article called "New Poetry." One of the best prose articles contained in the book is "Lesson for the Day." The portrait painter, Mr. Pabodie, is coming back. The sketch of (Margaret) Fuller's character which he attempted was not so successful. Mrs. Whitman gives her criticism of Pabodie. She believes Pabodie's scepticism springs less from the morbid indifference of an overwrought mind wearied with its last fruitless efforts in the pursuit of truth than from the unconscious self-love which is grasping at a philosophy which seems to offer an excuse for Pabodie's indolence. Pabodie chose Goethe's indifference as an illustration of his position. Mrs. Whitman claims he could not have chosen a more unfortunate subject. Her reason for taking such a position is given. Brownson has found his position of being a champion for woman. Mrs. Whitman would like to express the thanks of her entire sex. Brownson's two articles on the laboring classes are making their way into the world. A complaint as expressed by some shortsighted politicians is given by Mrs. Whitman. Few men possessed of sense question the justice of Brownson's remarks on the priesthood.
