Established 28 November 1843, archdiocese 12 February 1875, the see had as its first bishop and archbishop John Henni; Michael Heiss succeeded him in 1881, Frederick Katzer in 1891, Sebastian Messmer in 1903, Samuel Stritch in 1930, Moses Elias Kiley in 1940, Albert Gregory Meyer in 1953, William Edward Cousins in 1958, Rembert Weakland, OSB, in 1977.
