Background

Prior to about 1950, the Board concerned itself exclusively with managing the University's endowment. The Steering Committee was established in 1962 and thereafter played the major role in proposing and debating Board policy concerning all aspects of university administration. With the onset of Lay control of the University in 1967 the Board of Lay Trustees was reconstituted as the Board of Trustees.
