Scope and Content

Minutes, agenda, reports, correspondence, etc. of the Board and some of its committees, primarily the Development Committee's Steering Committee. The Board Meeting Files and the Committees on Administrative and Educational Affairs and Alumni and Public Affairs Meeting Files contain agenda, minutes, financial and committee reports, resolutions, and occasionally a few letters. There is a microfilm copy of the Board Meeting Files through 1966. The Steering Committee of the Development Committee files contain the same sorts of documents in addition to a substanial amount of important correspondence concerning policy matters and meetings and further reports on specific subjects.

Background

Prior to about 1950, the Board concerned itself exclusively with managing the University's endowment. The Steering Committee was established in 1962 and thereafter played the major role in proposing and debating Board policy concerning all aspects of university administration. With the onset of Lay control of the University in 1967 the Board of Lay Trustees was reconstituted as the Board of Trustees.
