Newspaper clippings regarding Bishop Hendricken; a report of Catholic statistics in Waterbury, New Haven County, by Hendricken (1863); a letter signed by Hendricken (1885); and copies of the Providence Visitor for 18 May 1934 and 25 May 1934 concerning the consecration of Bishop Keough.

Background

The Diocese of Providence, a suffragan of the Metropolitan See of Hartford, Connecticut, was erected in 1872 and originally included Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. In 1904, with the creation of the Diocese of Fall River, the area in Massachusetts was separated from Providence.

Thomas F. Hendricken (1827-1886) served as first Bishop of Providence until his death. Francis P. Keough (1890-1961) served as bishop from 1934 until 1947.
