Background

Frank N.M. Brown was head of Notre Dame's Aeronautical Engineering Department from its inception in 1935 until 1966. He stayed on as a professor until 1969. In 1943 he was commissioned by the U.S. State Department to spend a year in China evaluating education efforts. Professor Brown pioneered flow visualization through the invention of a space time recorder, smoke tunnel, and other devices. He died in December of 1976.
