Seventeen letters in German and one in English (1863-1888 and several undated) exchanged between John Ackermann, Franz [Ackermann?], Amanda Ackermann, Amanda Pfiffner, and Catherine Schlupp; a letter to Francis Xavier Ackerman from J. E. Walsh, 1 September 1888; letters from Ackerman to Charlotte Mayne and Paul Dienhart, 1935-1943; Dienhart and Mayne correspondence with Notre Dame, 1943 and 1947-1948; letters received by Francis X. Ackerman 1943-1946, but primarily in 1945, from former students and acquaintances; Ackerman's last will and testament, 1937; his contract and agreement with the University of Notre Dame, 1938; items from the 16 February 1939 Lay Faculty Dinner honoring him; clippings about Ackerman, his father, and his brother; memorial prayer cards for priests of the Congregation of Holy Cross; two group photographs of Notre Dame faculty, one dating from the nineteenth century and the other from 1914; photographs of Father Pius, Father Scheidler, and Father Angelus Fischer; a portrait of Ackerman; and two portfolios, one of engravings, lithographs, and prints of persons, landscapes, architecture, and decorative motifs, the other of sample papers and mechanical drawings. The bulk of the collection (6") is found in the two portfolios, the papers and photos comprising only about one inch.
From 1890 until 1938 Francis Xavier Ackerman taught Mechanical Drawing at the University of Notre Dame. Archivist Erik Dix has translated the German letters from his family papers into English and made them available as part of this collection.
