Scope and Content

Correspondence files of Donald P. Kommers, representing his work as a teacher and scholar, with some personal letters and some documenting his service at Notre Dame and beyond. Although he identified all of these files as correspondence, many of them contain papers or material distributed at conferences or committee meetings. Some contain no letters (except perhaps a cover letter), and these have been placed at the end of the collection and identified as Articles, Reports, and Research Papers. But similar material remains in the correspondence series that makes up most of the collection.

Background

Donald P. Kommers served Notre Dame as a Law School and political science professor. He earned an A.B. from the Catholic University of America, an A.M. and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where he also studied law. He served for two years as an officer in the Marine Corps. He was director of the Center for Civil and International Human Rights, 1976-1981, and editor of The Review of Politics, 1981-1992. He published highly respected articles and books on American and German constitutional law and history, and received honorary doctorates from Heidelberg University in German and St Norbert College in Wisconsin, and many other awards.
