Scope and Content

Photocopies of juvenilia, 1931-1941, consisting of editorials, columns, reviews, articles, and poems that Merton wrote before he entered the Abbey of Gethsemani in 1941 and published in the Oakhamian, the Granta, the Columbia Jester, the Columbia Spectator, the Columbia Review, the New York Times Book Review, the New York Herald Tribune Book Review, the Catholic World, and the Catholic Poetry Society of America Bulletin; and copies of some of the books he wrote after he became a monk.

Background

Catholic author and activist Thomas Merton, who in his autobiography told how he became a monk of the Abbey of Gethsemani, attended Cambridge University for one year and finished his college education at Columbia University.
