Background

Rev. Edward A. Malloy, C.S.C., served from 1987-2005 as the 16th president of the University of Notre Dame. He was elected by the Board of Trustees in 1986 after having served five years as vice-president and associate provost. Fr. Malloy led the University during a time of rapid growth in its reputation, faculty, and resources. In addition to serving Notre Dame as its president for eighteen years, Fr. Malloy has been actively involved with many national, state, and local organizations. He has played a leading role in efforts to promote community service and combat substance abuse and has also devoted much time to his service within the Catholic Church. Fr. Malloy remains a full professor in the Department of Theology and has been a member of the Notre Dame faculty since 1974.
