Records of the Associate and Assistant Provosts have been arranged into eight major series. The first four series relate to the individuals who have held the office of associate or assistant provost since the position was created in the 1970s. Because there are several associate provosts in place concurrently, each series begins with one associate provost and includes each person who succeeded him or her. The first four series are arranged into subseries that include "common" subject files that spanned the tenure of one or more persons in the line of succession, as well as the files of the individual associate provosts themselves. The last four record series are subject related and are grouped together because they spanned the tenure of many associate provosts at the University. These record series are titled Accreditation, Center for Continuing Education, Honor Code / Honesty Committee, and ROTC. Within each series, the files have been arranged either alphabetically or chronologically at the discretion of the archivist.
Some folders also contain documents originating in the office of the Vice-President for Academic Affairs, the predecessor of the Provost. These files came to the Archives in many different accessions and with very little original order; the order that follows was imposed by the processing archivist. The titles of associate and assistant provost may be used interchangeably.
