Scope and Content

Correspondence, articles, offprints, clippings, newsletters, brochures, photographs, and other documents representing Maurice Lavanoux continuing interest in modern liturgical art and architecture and his efforts to organize a Society for the Renewal of Christian Art to carry on the work of the Liturgical Arts Society.

Background

In May of 1972 the last issue of Liturgical Arts magazine appeared; Maurice Lavanoux put together an issue to be published in August but did not have sufficient funds to bring it out. Because of these financial difficulties, the Liturgical Arts Society collapsed, but Lavanoux continued his extensive international correspondence with artists and others interested in liturgical arts, many of whom continued to send him photographs of works of art. He tried to establish the Society for the Renewal of Christian Art to carry on the work of the Liturgical Arts Society, but it did not last.
