Documents concerning un-American activities: consisting of ARTICLES (Unpublished essays or information documents); CLIPPINGS (Published articles clipped or photocopied from their source); COMMITTEE REPORTS AND PAPERS (Any official document prepared by or for a standing committee); CORRESPONDENCE (Any document, excluding internal committee business, with both a sending and a receiving party); MISCELLANEOUS (Includes campaign material); PRESS RELEASES ( Official documents or prepared statements for public release) ; PUBLICATIONS (Magazines, newspapers, newsletters etc. in their entirety); RESOLUTIONS (Senate or House resolutions); SPEECHES (Documents written for the purpose of oral presentation in front of a public or organizational, non-official audience); and TESTIMONY (Documents written for the purpose of either oral presentation or printed distribution to an official, i.e. Congressional, audience. Also an extensive library of related printed material including every hearing of the House Un-American Activities Committee.

Background

Richard J. O'Melia, president of Notre Dame's class of 1939, became Assistant City Attorney for Milwaukee, worked for the U.S. Senate Government Operations Committee and later became Director of the Bureau of Enforcement for the Civil Aeronautics Board. He collected material having to do with U.S. congressional investigations of ccommunism and subversive activities. He donated his collection to Notre Dame in 1973.
