Scope and Content

Papers of Timothy Unsworth, consisting of nine linear feet of manuscript material, chiefly drafts and copies of his writings with related correspondence, but also including his master's thesis and diploma; also five linear inches of high-school yearbooks and seven linear inches of video tapes of his television appearances.

Background

Born in 1929 in Canton, Ohio, Tim Unsworth attended Iona College and Fordham University and earned a master's degree in Spanish in Mexico. He joined the Irish Christian Brothers and served as principal of Brother Rice High School, Chicago, starting in 1967. He left the Christian Brothers and married Jean Morman in 1970. He worked in university development at DePaul University, the University of Chicago, and the Northwestern University Dental School. He write a column for the National Catholic Reporter, 1982-2006. He wrote several books, some of them in collaboration with his wife, Jean: The Lambs of Libertyville: a Working Community of Retarded Adults; The Last Priests in America: Conversations with Remarkable Men; Upon This Rock: the Church, Work, Money, and You; Here Comes Everybody!: Stories of Church; Catholics on the Edge; I Am Your Brother Joseph: Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago; and Tim Unsworth: Articles from the National Catholic Reporter.
