Scope and Content

Four letters written by Augustin Schoeffler to another priest, Louis Hoffer: an undated autograph letter; an autograph letter written in Paris, 12 November 1846; an autograph letter written in Paris, 8 September 1847, and a manuscript copy of a letter written in Hong Kong, 24 May 1848. One letter written by Abbé Nicolas Krick to an unidentified woman, 26 January 1849. One purple pouch embroidered with the monogram "VAS" (Venerable Augustin Schoeffler) in which all five letters had been kept.

Also an edition of 74 of Schoeffler's letters (January 1993) which developed into an edition of 88 letters and other works, Saint Augustin Schoeffler: lettres d'un lorrain martyr au Tonkin (1822-1851) (Paris: Missions Etrangères), edited and annotated by Bernard Stelly.

Background

Born 22 November 1822 in Mittelbronn, Lorraine, France (department 57), Augustin Schoeffler became a priest of the Diocese of Nancy. Sent to the Kingdom of Tonkin by the Paris Foreign Mission Society, he was beheaded by the Vietnamese on the first of May 1851. He was canonized in 1988.

Nicolas Krick, another missionary priest, was martyred in Tibet in 1854. Abbé Bernard Stelly is director of the Diocesan Library of Nancy.
