    At this time, McDevitt was serving as the superintendent of Catholic schools in Philadelphia and was active in the establishment of the NCEA. These letters have to do with a Bureau of Health request that the Catholic schools pay for the supplies necessary for their fumigation. McDevitt's reply shows that Catholics, one-third of the population, pay for one-half of the cost of maintaining public schools, and get no benefit from them; they should therefore not be required to pay for fumigation, which is done without expense to public schools.

Diary (1895-1900,1926) of Fr. James A. Burns CSC (1867-1940), professor of chemistry, and President of Notre Dame, 1919-1922. Recounts conversations with Notre Dame leaders and officials including Cavanaugh, Morrissey, Zahm, Corby, Bishop Keane, and others. Also includes: biographical sketch of Zahm; statistical analysis of students by classes 1895-99; budgetary questions and strategies; battles over educational policy; progress of changes in parietals; insights into campus politics; death of Fr. Corby; Spanish-American War; Vatican reaction to Zahm's book on evolution in 1899.
