Also reports, correspondence, memoranda, notes, and clippings, 1980-1985, with files on the International Catholic Migration Commission, United States government grants to CRS, earthquakes in Italy and Chile, and famine in Ethiopia.

Rita Pfeifer, in whose charge Monsignor Harnett left his filing cabinet, sent his papers to Notre Dame in February and June of 1989. She took care to indicate the original location of each box in the drawers of his filing cabinet. His filing system consisted of a large alphabetical series of subject files; a drawer of files, some of them on similar subjects, which he probably separated because of their personal or confidential nature; a few folders containing his correspondence from 1966; and files from his service as an executive advisor to Catholic Relief Services in New York at the end of his career. This last series dates from the early 1980s; nearly all of the other material dates from the late 1950s and early 1960s. Personnel records, though originally filed with the letter P among the subjects, clearly constitute a separate series and have therefore been placed after the alphabetical run:

Correspondence with Rita Pfeifer suggests that Monsignor Harnett had been weeding his files at the end of his life. Several folders were empty when they arrived at Notre Dame; these have been listed before printed material at the end of the inventory. Other files may contain only items consciously chosen by Monsignor Harnett; e.g., folders labeled "Monthly Reports" do not contain a report for each month but only a few samples. The correspondence files from 1966 do not seem to have been weeded in this way.

For purposes of preservation, printed items and photographs have been removed and stored separately. A list of printed material appears at the end of this inventory. Photographs have generally been copied on acid-free paper and the copy left in place of the photographic print.
