Scope and Content
Manuscripts of poems, plays, fiction, and non-fiction by Charles Phillips; correspondence with Charles Warren Stoddard, 1905-1909; correspondence with others; a letter and a few poems by Vachel Lindsay (1926); and the manuscript of Phillips' book Paderewski: the Story of a Modern Immortal published in 1933; also a notebook on the origins of Virgil's description of Hades in the Aeneid; stories by Charles Warren Stoddard about bohemian life in San Francisco; and grade books, 1921-1933.
Background
Charles Phillips was born in New Richmond, Wisconsin, in November of 1880. He earned an M.A. from St. Mary's College in California. He served as editor of the Northwestern Chronicle in St. Paul, Minnesota, of the Monitor in San Francisco, and of the New Century in Washington D.C.. He served with the American Red Cross Committee to Poland, 1919-1922, and on the special committee of the National Catholic Welfare Council to Mexico in 1925. As Professor of English at the University of Notre Dame, 1924-1933, he helped found the University Theatre.
