The Last Primaries

As Jimmy Carter as well as Ronald Reagan had already received the required number of delegates for the nomination as presidential candidates, the last primaries lacked suspense. On the Democratic side though, Edward Kennedy achieved the best results of his campaign in the last primaries. Kennedy won the important primaries of Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and at the end also the primary of California. But nonetheless, he could not catch up on Carter’s lead. With 1,948 delegates vs. Kennedy’s 1,211 Carter is practically assured of the Democratic nomination. On the Republican side, Reagan virtually has no opponent, after Congressman John Anderson had already left the Republican fold by the end of April, campaigning as an independent. Although George Bush had won the Pennsylvania primary, he has remained far behind Reagan in the number of delegates.
