Construction Work in Space

While America enjoyed a peaceful Thanksgiving, one could see on the television screen how the crew of the Shuttle Atlantis assembled a tower in space, which should serve as a model for a planned space station. What so far have just been fantasies of science fiction is becoming tangible reality.

Addendum

[NASA’s plans for building a space station were overshadowed by the Shuttle Challenger disaster end of January 1986. After long-lasting experiments with the Salyut program, the Soviet Union succeeded on February 19, 1986 putting the space station MIR into orbit. In the following years, NASA participated in the MIR project. At the same time, America and Russia collaborated in building the International Space Station (ISS). Besides America and Russia, 14 additional nations are cooperating in this project. The ISS was put in operation at the beginning of November 2000.]

Before the Wall

Secretary of State George P. Shultz, who is presently on a visit to West Berlin, stood yesterday in pouring rain before the Wall. He declared: “The division of this city and the division of Germany are unnatural and inhuman.” From West Berlin, Shultz moved on to visit, for the first time as Secretary of State, the East Bloc countries Romania and Hungary.

Thanks for the Memory

At the annual NBC Christmas Show, Bob Hope sang again with unvarying vigor his theme song: “Thanks for the Memory.” He has become a national icon. Some show arrangements are so strongly established in America that they seem to go on forever.

[Bob Hope was born 1903 in England, but came with his parents to America as a child. He made a name for himself early on as a comedian in Vaudeville, entertainment programs on radio, and as a film actor. Above all, he has become a national icon when, from 1940 on, he brought, even under danger to his life, the best entertainment to the American forces in battle zones around the world. Bob Hope is known as the entertainment artist who has received the most honorary degrees, distinctions, and awards in the world.]

The Horror of Terrorism

The Peace of Christmas was brutally disturbed by terror attacks at the airports of Rome and Schwechat in Vienna. The victims were innocent passengers who, just at the moment of the explosions, were in the hallway before departure. In the past year, the horror of terrorism has been much in evidence.
