Sedella, (O.M.Cap.), Father Antonio de
New Orleans, (Louisiana)

to Bishop (Luis Penalver y Cardenas)
(New Orleans, Louisiana)

Concerning the free or slave state of infants baptized, they can rely only on the word of those assisting at the baptism. Since the entry is more than 2 yerfs old, it is almost impossible to remember why he recorded the child as free. He corroborates the good faith with which they proceed not only with this sacrament but in making the entries. for instance, in the burial register on January 2, he recorded as a charity case, Urel Dupre, a native of Nantes, assured that he had died suddenly in the home of Mr. Saulet and in dire poverty. The truth of the case was that Urel did not die suddenly but made a will, nor in poverty, as he ;eft ,pre tjam 2.000 pesos. It is easy to be deceived.

Sedella, (O.M.Cap.), Father Antonio de
New Orleans, (Louisiana)

Sedella, of the cathedral in New Orleans, certifies that in one of the baptismal registers for the colored, the fifth entry on page 229, No. 1889 is: On January 3, 1798 Sedella baptized a mulatto free child, born November 26, 1797, son of Maria Luisa, mulatto slave of Mr. Chanti, giving him the name of Thomas.

The quality of freedom recorded in the baptismal entry does not affect his slavery or freedom. a note is to be put in the margin. Quintero certifies this and adds that the pastor made the annotation as ordered.
