Penalver y Cardenas, Bishop Luis
New Orleans, Louisiana

Father Gregorio White, a native of Ireland, came to this province by a royal order of April 5, 1786, chosen by the Bishop of Salamanca to serve parishes in his own language, which he did in various places until for reasons of health he obtained a royal permit on October 24, 1799 to retire to Bilboa. Due to go through this city to Havana, White has asked for letters of recommendation. Letters are to be dispatched and Penalver attests that White is not excommunicated, irregular, or suspended. Father Isidro Quintero acts as secretary.

(Penalver y Cardenas), Bishop Luis
New Orleans, Louisiana

to The Vicar-General of Havana
Havana, (Cuba)

Confidential. White came to this city in the frigate Mississippi and from here to Bilboa. His conduct would be irreprehensible if he had not sometimes drank to excess for which he was corrected. In case he should fall again into this excess, Penalver judges it necessary to advise the vicar-general. (A note in Penalver's hand difficult to read): Left in the felucca St. John Baptist, January 9(?), 1801.
