(Penalver y Cardenas, Luis), Bishop

Proceedings concerning the flight of Father Buenaventura de Castro, (O.M.Cap.), pastor of Galvestown, from Iberville to Mexico by way of Nagodoches.

--------
1799 Sep. 12

(Penalver y Cardenas, Luis), Bishop of
New Orleans, Louisiana

On September 3 Father Felix Quintanar, (O.M.Cap.), pastor of Iberville, informed (Penalver) that his predecessor, de Castro, having sold everything he had, on August 29 had left in a pirogue with his negro for up the river to Plaquemine to continue his journey through Nacogdoches to Mexico which is what he had asked from (Penalver) and been refused so that this is a disobedience of orders and against the law as he has no passport. Instructions have been sent to Father Pedro Pavie, pastor of Natchitoches through which de Castro would pass to stop him there and send him back to New Orleans, asking civil aid if necessary. From Father Luis de Quintanilla, (O.M.Cap.) and Andres Fernandez), in charge of his affairs, (Penalver) learns that there are several interests here that would be jeopardized if he goes and what is owing him from his parish which is at (Penalver's) disposition, would go to his college in Havana. Father Isidro Quintero acts as his secretary.

On August 17 de Castro arrived in this parish of St. Gabriel and Quintanar notified him of Penalver's orders which he refused to carry out. While waiting for Penalver's reply Quintanar went to Galveston on August 25 partly to gather up what was there and partly because he had been advised that there were several infants to be baptized and many who wished to go to Confession. It was the 29th when he left for his parish at which he arrived at 5 in the afternoon. He found that de Castro had left that morning after selling all he had to two inhabitants and had left with his negro for Plaquemines in order to get to Anakodose and from there to Mexico.
