Hassett, Father Thomas
New Orleans, (Louisiana)

to Manuel de Salcedo
(New Orleans, Louisiana)

Hassett has read the letter of the Commandant of Valenzuela de Chetimaches in which he recommends the petition of the inhabitants for a second parish in this district, which papers Salcedo enclosed in his letter of September 18. While their request is well founded, the scarcity of priests in the province makes it impossible to accede to the request. Also, he has no objection to the building of a house in their cemetery. However, there cannot be a second parish erected until there is a priest to serve it.

Hassett, Father Thomas
New Orleans, (Louisiana)

to Antonio Morales
(New Orleans, Louisiana)

Hassett gave Morales' letter to the Governor-General asking his consent to his proposal of September 7 about the renting of one of the church houses. In reply the governor-General said he had no objection and since Hassett has none either, Morales could occupy the house immediately at the terms set forth.

Morales, Antonio
New Orleans, (Louisiana)

to Father Thomas Hasset(t)
(New Orleans, Louisiana)

Although the Vice Patron and the first bihsop of these provinces have given Morales the right to rent the houses and pews of the Cathedral, whose income is in his charge, he is not sure that he can use this faculty in his own favor. There have been vacant for a month and a half two of these houses which rent for 20 pesos a month. Morales proposes that he rent one of them for 18 pesos which is all he can afford.

to Manuel de Salcedo

Hassett sends Morales' letter to see if Salcedo can grant the request which seems to Hassett to be just, to rent the house at the price given because of Morales' zeal and efficiency in his duties.
