COLFAX'S HONORABLE S. CANDIDACY
"On the fifth day of October the members in Council assembled determined that owing to the many marks of friendship and goodwill we have received from Mr. Colfax of South Bend and other officers of the Government, the Community, that is all such members of it who can vote, should vote for the Honorable Mr. Colfax as a representative in Congress and for the other nominees of the said ticket. And Brother Lawrence was especially directed by the President of the Council (Sorin) to carry out the resolution which -- as it was afterwards discovered -- he failed to do." 1864
