Rivero, Thomasa

Thomasa Rivero, native of the Canary Islands and a resident of New Orleans appeared and stated that she was married for seven months to Francisco Cantero, a native of Valencia, Spain. The ceremony took place in the Auxiliary Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe outside the walls of Havana, Cuba, on November 24, 1794. He abandoned her leaving for Spain. Learning that he had established himself in Vera Cruz, she asks (Penalver) to send a letter to the bishop of that diocese to bring him back. Father (Isidro) Quintero acts as secretary.

Father Melchor Martin, assistant pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Francis Xavier, certifies that in Book 3 of Spanish marriages there is this entry: "On November 24, 1794, before Vicente Antonio de la Huerta, matrimonial notary, Martin united in marriage Cantero, son of Fran(cis)co Cantero and Josefa Aret(?), daughter of Josefa Carmona, and Tomasa Rivero, daughter of J(ose)ph Rivero and Dominga Flores. The witnesses were Manuel Castellanos and J(ose)ph Dias Montenigro. This is a copy of the original sent to Martin from Guadalupe June 26, 1796."

The deputy ecclesiastical judge of Vera Cruz is to be informed that Tomasa Rivero asked that a letter be sent to the Bishop of the diocese, to his vicar-general and to the judge in order to have sent back to this province, Fran(cis)co Cantero, her husband. (Quintero is to insert) the petition, the marriage certificate and the judgment.
