(Penalver y Cardenas, Bishop Luis)
Proceedings for rebuilding part of the roof of the Cathedral.
--------
1798 Sep. 3
(Penalver y Cardenas), Bishop Luis
New Orleans, Louisiana
to Manuel Gayoso de Lemos
(New Orleans, Louisiana)
In spite of repairs made to the roof it has continued to leak in the chancel and transept. (Penalver) asked Master Sergeant Gilberto Guillemard of the faculty of architecture, to draw up a plan and estimate of the cost which he encloses. The beams have sagged so that it holds the rain. The cost amounts to 1800 pesos and the Church had on hand at the end of December 1797, 1314 pesos 2 1/2 reales, out of which expenses have been paid in the eight months of this year. (Penalver) would like Gayoso's and the Royal Patron's permission to make the repairs. The repairs prior to this date were borne by Colonel Andres de Almonaster (y Roxas), now deceased. The income of the church is not adequate to rebuild and the Colonel undertook to build a Curial House whose rent was to be used to build a house, the church and other pious objects. This work, begun in the last third of 1795 finished the first part, the masonry, but the major part of the arsenal was assigned to other things and all work on the Curial House has been suspended since his death on April 25 of this year. (Penalver) considers himself responsible to the heirs to complete the work; the proposal to the king, the approbation of several royal decrees together with his responsibility makes (Penalver) present this to Gayoso. The Church will not forget its benefactor.
