Maxwell sends the item taken from the register of Kaokias (Cahokia, Illinois) asked for in Penalver's letter of September 22. Maxwell informed Father (Charles) Leandre Lusson, then pastor of Kaokias and now pastor of St. Charles, Missouri that he was not to perform marriages on this side without the consent of the pastor; Lusson said that it was with the consent of Father Pedro Didier, pastor of St. Louis.

Extract from the register of Holy Family Church of Cahokia, St. Clair County of the United States of America: On November24, 1797 Lusson, a religious priest, pastor of the parish, married Bernard Ruize de Molina, Lieutenant in the Spanish army, oldest son of Francois Ruiz de Molina of Cordova, Spain # (insert from page 2 of letter) and Francoise Serano Oyo Oyeda, # and Pelagie Verdon, younger daughter of Joseph Verdon and Victoria Richelet, deceased, of St. Louis, (Missouri) of Illinois parish, a dependency of New Orleans. Pelagie was under the authority of Auguste Chouteau, a merchant of St. Louis, her guardian, who with William Arundel, clerk of the parish, Jean Hays, Bernard Pratte C(lau)de Jarrot, required witnesses, and the contracting parties signed the register. Olivier certifies the above extract.

Trudeau, Lieutenant Colonel and Lieutenant Governor of the western posts of Illinois, certifies that the two signatures on the attached paper signed with his flourish, are those of the pastor of Kaokias and of the magistrate of that place, Juan Bautista Dumoulin of the American section.

Didie, former pastor of St. Louis, having arrived in New Orleans and being reprimanded about Molina's marriage which had been reported by Maxwell in his letter of May 25; Didie had interfered by giving his consent which must be given in a statement which he did not make because of his death on September 2. Therefore Penalver orders that the corresponding documents be considered.

Molina appeared and stated that on July 3 the Captain-General had given him permission to marry Pelagia. On the occasion of his being in Islas Negras this wedding took place on November 24 in Cahokia before Lus(s)on, by virtue of the permission given by Didie, as the document states. Molina asks Penalver to order this extract put into the books of the parish and to dispense him from any defects.

Someruelos received the commandant's letter of April 30 with the petition and documents for Carlos de Vellemont, captain of the Infantry, asking for permission to marry Catalina Bangi. He has also received the letter of June 18 with the two letters of the commandant's predecessor of March 30 and April 20, two other petitions for permission to marry from Bartolome Pellerin, Lieutenant in the above corps and Second Lieutenant of the army Bernardo Molina whose fiancees are Maria Isabel Labat and Maria Pelagia Berdon. None of the three has shown the damage which would result from the delay of their marriages as prescribed by the royal ordinance of June 29, 1798 but Someruelos has granted the permission.
