He has fear in offering his sonnet for the Ave Maria. His professor, Father (Joseph) Carrier, (C.S.C) encouraged him to do so and aided him in improving it. Hudson may throw it away if it is not satisfactory. He would like to have Hudson inform him of its value, if any.

In reply to Hudson's favor of the 29th, the person named does write the notices whenever her strength permits, and when someone else pens them the readers notice the absence of her style. She longs for a rest this summer. Puck is rivalling Harper in vulgarity. What can decent Society do in self-protection. He sends Hudson Puck's latest.

Hickey, P(atrick) V.:

to F(athe)r (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
He was sorry he could not go to Chicago but it was impossible. Hudson has seen the article in the Catholic Review about the new Cathedral. They turned out three papers in a fortnight. Hickey may go to St. Louis in June, and if he does he will stop at Notre Dame. Father Walsh called today. Hickey wants to know what query he left unanswered. He wonders if Miss (Kathleen) O'Meara knew there was no profit in having her book republished for the Ave Maria. He is pleased with Father DeBraun's book. He has received the Ave Maria. Hudson is to tell Mother Angela (Gillespie) that Hickey gave Father Walsh the list of names that she wanted.

Howe, Frances (R.):
Bailly Homestead
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
She wanted Mother Angela's letter returned. Mother Angela is not pleased because Miss (Eliza Allen) Starr's notice does not appear since it was demanded at a time when it was a trial to their feelings to give many of the details, and she cannot believe that the delay is intentional. She has a very kind letter from Father Julian Benoit. She asks Hudson to pray for them next Thursday as that dreadful priest is coming to say Mass there. If a layman said half of what that priest says she would order him off of the place; he seems to think he has received a Divine commission to persecute them. She does not complain to everyone but thinks there is a time when such things should be made known as silence permits those actions to flourish harmfully.

Emery, S(usan) L.:

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
She has just read a book by Madame Craven, which seems to be a new work. It has the imprint "Didier & Cie, Paris, 1879". She does not know if it has been translated and wonders if there is any harm in her making use of it in the enclosed article. If suitable for the Ave Maria she believes it would be good to use it while it is still fresh to the people. She asks Hudson if people still give up their all and serve for prose as the ladies of Naples did? She has an idea for another article illustrating a poor woman in Italy. It would treat of shrines and miracles. Is Hudson interested? She received a letter from Mother Abbess of the Convent of Poor Clares who tells her that a Mrs. Parsons is going to publish a life of S(iste)r Colette and wants Miss Emery to secure a circulation in America. She is delighted with "St. Philip's Memory in Rome" but what about "Cyril's Vocation"? Is there any information at Notre Dame on the founding of the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception, as she needs some? She saw Brother Francis last Sunday after Benediction but their talk was too short. She believes that she and Hudson would talk fast if she ever got to see him. She asks Hudson to pray for her.

White, Rhoda E.:
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
Hudson's review of the "Two Brides" in the Ave Maria brought tears to the eyes of the author who was so grateful to find her high aim had found a response in Hudson's heart. She asks Hudson if he read the life of Jenny C. White, the daughter of the late Judge James W. White. Rose and Arey were drawn from real life as were the other characters described by Father O'Reilly. She asks Hudson to scatter this novel to help elevate our youth. She has the pleasure of reading the Doctor's manuscript before it goes to the printer. They have Catholic novels issued by Catholic publishers and written by Catholic priests that would not be allowed in a Protestant house for an hour, so she thinks that everyone should hail such an author as Dr. (Bernard) O'Reilly and take part in spreading his works.
P.S. Her husband was a nephew of Gerald Griffin, of Limerick. She has two sisters-in-law and one daughter who are Nuns of the Sacred Heart.

Time and distance have not been able to diminish the deeply seated affection which Carrier has cherished for Edwards ever since he acted as his devoted little Sacristan. He hopes they will be brought together again.

Hudson receives thanks for the kind words, and Tello expects them from his generous friendship. Tello will be pleased to publish the "Chicago Times" sketch. A proof is enclosed to prove he recognized Hudson's earmarks in the Notre Dame notice. The "Leader" attack was infamous. The Sisters are not receiving any aid from either Ordinary or priests. The poor women are struggling to pay a debt of $30,000.00 on their building. They have to pay the bank $2,000.00 a year. Being French speaking and strangers they have not yet met the entire heart of the "Irish" people. Why did the "Leader" attack them? In the interests of a humbug relief association, The Bethel. The Bethel purchased a $61,000.00 home without a cent to pay for it and enlisted, the "Leader" in this crusade against the Sisters. Now the "Leader" asks the public to pay for the house of the Bethel Association. Cowles is intensified in bitterness at his daughter's conversion. He told someone that we had broken up the peace of his household. Our Lady smiles on Hudson and his efforts.

After being misdirected, the check Hudson sent reached her. Dorsey thanks Hudson for his expression of appreciation of her efforts to stem the tide of sensational reading matter. Reading matter for Catholic youths should include the lessons of morality and religion blended with dramatic incidents. Since Mrs. (Anna) Sadlier laid down her pen, Dorsey has been the only writer of Catholic fiction. Because of Mother Angela (Gillespie's) letter to Father (Edward Sorin), which he sent to Dorsey with his postscript of endorsement, in which they held her story "Adrift" unfit for the Ave Maria, she will never again write for the Ave Maria, unless certain conditions are fulfilled. The reports that Dorsey owed $500, was sued for debts and has an income of $2000 per annum are false. Some one has her confused with two other women having a similar name that reside near Washington. Taylor, Sister Mary Magdalene:
London, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
The news of the fire of Notre Dame has made her very sad. It is a mystery that there should be such a loss in these times of need for Catholic education. Hudson should deduct a dollar from his next remittance to her. There is an error in the Ave Maria of June 7 regarding a story called "Little Lulia" by "Cousin Maurice". This is taken verbatum from a book written by her sister, Mrs. Dean, and published 20 years ago. Her sister would be happy to know her work was used but to take what she has written and call it by "Cousin Maurice" is not fair. She is sure Hudson knew nothing of this. "An Easter Story" which was in the same number was taken from the same book, but the credit was not given to anyone for writing it. She wants to secure the copyright in England of "Stonehighs of Stonehigh" as a London publisher will print it. She asks Hudson to send the proof sheets. She is going to write a series of children's stories called "Angel Series" which could be published in the Ave Maria if Hudson desires.

Dorsey, A(nna) H(anson):
Washington, D. C.
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Mrs. Dorsey has mailed Hudson part of the last chapter of "Beth's Promise" and she will send the concluding pages this week. The story has gone beyond the length that was originally planned, but it was necessary or else it would have interfered with the construction and disappointed the readers of the Ave Maria. She is sure Hudson will be willing to pay whatever may be over what she has received. Our Blessed Lady has given her great help; with all the interruptions she has never written with less effort. She thanks Hudson for being so kind and encouraging and willing to help her whenever she asked for money. She comments on several mistakes in the last issue of the Ave Maria. She informs Hudson that someone is pruning copy and has left out the word "Kismet". She never puts anything in a story that is to be cut out. She never received the book of devotion that Hudson mentioned. Mrs. Angela Eastman has lost the use of her limbs, and if standing without assistance she shakes from head to foot, and would fall if she were not held. She would like to obtain some blessed mortar from Knock but nobody notices her requests and she asks Hudson for assistance. Her son-in-law has been ill since April with a heart disease but is slowly recovering, the answer to many prayers. He and her daughter have become devout practical Catholics. Hudson should pray for her.

Emery, S(usan) L.:
Dorchester, (Massachusetts)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Miss Emery is disappointed as she has received nothing for her "Into Port". She wonders if Hudson's letter could have been lost. She does not like to take anything from the Ave Maria with all the trouble at Notre Dame, but for the last two years she has earned so very little. When the "Catholic Record" was in existence Mr. Hardy and Mr. Mahoney used to pay her at a fixed rate per article and not per page and she wonders if Hudson would be willing to do the same. She is writing this letter in spite of what Hudson said of the difficulties in the acceptance and publication of the articles as she does not want Hudson to think of her interests before those of the magazine. She wants Hudson to speak frankly and she wants to feel definitely at work as composition is a talent with her. She does not know how long she will be able to work in this way. She is engaged in a drama for a girl's school and wants to know if Hudson has a knowledge of the value of them. She thanks Hudson for the pamphlets on Confraternity but it is not what she wanted. What has become of Cyril, did Angela die? The letters from Arthur in Rome on the fiesta in honor of St. Philip Neri were charming. Miss McCarthy gave her a $1.75 in payment for six months of the magazine. A friend of hers who works in the post office told her that only 3 copies of the magazine used to come through and how many come. She is an agent. She thinks Hudson has "Love's Work", "St. Ignatius", "Three Crosses", and "Subject in Hope". She fancies that he wants a number of small stories about the length of "Through an Alpine Pass". She wants to write some and has some ideas if that is what Hudson wants. She wants to know if she should send several subscriptions by postal order, or what does Hudson prefer?

Strub, (Father) Jos(eph):
S(ain)t Louis, M(iss)o(uri)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
At the request of a young man Strub talked to while at Notre Dame he is sending a picture of the Bishop of Little Rock, (Arkansas). The gentleman desired pictures of every Bishop in the United States. He imagines Hudson had trouble after the fire at the University and could not attend the prospected lottery. Miss (Eliza Allen) Starr perhaps could not be ready with the description of the prices. He has written to Father (Louis J.) L'Etourneau in French and is ashamed he cannot write in English. He is going to Sharpsburg. Pa. for a couple weeks and Hudson should direct his mail to Sharpsburgh.

Egan, Maurice F.:
(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
The Scholastic's remarks about his sketches in the "Guardian Angel" not being the things for children are quite right, and he profits by their kind criticism. He has not enough courage to gather anything for Notre Dame but wonders if it would be of any use to bring out a small volume of his religious poems for the benefit of the college. The poems would be a pretext to "rake in" some money. He sends his regards to Edwards.

Emery, S(usan) L.:
Dorchester, (Massachusetts)
to Father (Daniel E.)Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Miss Emery has received Hudson's postal order for $16. She is glad she sent that letter to Hudson as it will show how matters stand. She becomes very puzzled over money matters as she does not seem to understand them. She asks Hudson to pray for her and a Protestant friend who has been ill and suffers with nervous prostration, and sometimes they fear insanity. She would like to give her the water of Lourdes.

Ffrench, N. J. O'Connell:
Sacramento, Cal(ifornia)
to F(athe)r D(aniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
He would like to have Hudson accept this little sketch. He has been ill for two months which is a hard trail even though he is sure of employment in the college after vacation. If Hudson thinks it is too long, it may be divided where it is marked. If it cannot be published he would like Hudson to preserve it for him.
