Théard, C.C. Parish of St. John Baptist,:
(Louisiana)
to Bishop (Francis Xavier) Leray:
New Orleans, (Louisiana)
When Archbishop (Napoleon Joseph) Perché was among them, Theard spoke to him twice about his unbelievable obsession. For nearly five years he has been obsessed with the thought that the world is coming to its end and that he is the anti-Christ. He has had various treatments and finds himself a little better when he has some work. But he tires quickly and must be circumspect. He is poor and can not give himself all the distractions and gentleness which an easier situation would allow. Leray can refer to Father (Adrian) Rouquette in his regard.

Rouxel, Father G(ustave) A.:
New Orleans, (Louisiana)
to Archbishop (Napoleon Joseph Perché:
Paris, France)
Rouxel is taking advantage of the departure of little Marie Lacoste to send him these last words before his departure from France. (Paul Emile) Théard has announced (Perché's) departure on either the 16th or the 23rd. The day before yesterday he received a telegram from New York from Bishop (Francis Xavier) Leray announcing his arrival for October 30. They still know nothing of his plans except by a letter from a priest who saw him in Brittany and who says that he has full powers from Rome to administer the finances and levy taxes on the churches in order to pay the debt. That job, without mentioning the administration of the diocese of Natchitoches, will give him much to do. As for Perché, he still has the most important duty of a bishop, the spiritual administration. To assist him he has a clergy that is completely devoted to him, despite the misunderstandings produced by the unfortunate circumstances of the two last years. P.S. Upon reflection, he prefers to mail the letter. It will arrive more quickly.

Mr. Grohagan has corroborated Egan's assertion that John Locke is a Catholic. The Ave Maria should start another controversy. Nugent Robinson is editor of the new comic paper "Chic." John MacCarthy is a good fellow, and would write with pleasure for the "Ave Maria." Egan sends his regards to Professor Edwards and Brother Stanislaus. Egan wonders why the University has not sent him a diploma. Scribner's has a poem of Egan's to be published soon.

He has received $50 from Father (P. Felix) Dicharry for Quèlard. The Catholics of Vicksburg are very generous. He has collected at Lake Providence, Milliken's Bend, and Monroe; he has borrowed money and he will do everything to soothe the affliction. He will give him a decent burial. Father (C.) Hilliard, Father J.:
Chevaigné, (France)
to Bishop (Francis Xavier Leray:
New Orleans, Louisiana)
Hilliard received (Leray's) letter of September 13, the eve of the latter's departure for America, but he did not reply sooner because he wished to let the first impression pass. He does not believe he merits (Leray's) reproaches. (Leray) charges he wrote to Cardinal (John Simeoni) and accused the Roman Court and (Leray) of injustice, when, (Leray) claims, he did not even have any knowledge of Hilliard's transaction with Archbishop (Napoleon Joseph) Perché. It is true he wrote to His Eminence, but he made no accusations of injustice. He only told the history of the debt, which (Leray) knows perfectly well, since last March 29 he wrote to Hilliard about it. The loan was contracted legally and in concert with the Holy Father and the Roman Court. Bankruptcy would be a crying injustice. In his difficult position and knowing that (Leray) was to be at Rome, he felt justified in asking (Simeoni) to plead his case. (Leray) also charges that 6% interest was usurious, but the law allows 8% and he believed he was doing a good work when he loaned the money at a lower rate. Leray claims he has a million and a half of debts to pay, but that is no defense against his just claim. He does not understand how (Leray) can say that the debt does not have even the appearance of legality. He received his bonds in the name of the diocese and signed by Perché and Father (Joseph Marie) Millet. He begs (Leray) to have pity on his position. Perché has paid the interest already due, but at the end of December another 450 francs will fall due. He voluntarily consents to have the diocese retain the 15,000 francs if the interest is paid. If not, he will be obliged to seek reimbursement.

The second is to inform the other asylums, namely those conducted by the Sisters (of the Third Order) of Mount Carmel, the (Congregation of Marianite) Sisters of the Holy Cross, and the Conferences of St. Vincent de Paul, who also had appealed, to likewise withdraw. Raymond was not present at the meeting which adopted the resolution now revoked, or he would have tried to prevent it. Dicharry, Father P. F(elix):
Natchitoches, (Louisiana)
to Bishop (Francis Xavier Leray:

During (Leray's) absence Father (Joseph Mary) Quélard fell dangerously ill. Dicharry sent him by Father (Ludovic) Enaut an order on Father (Gustave A.) Rouxel for $50, which he does not believe was enough. Father (F.X.) Guay left Marksville with all the money which remained so that Father (Paul E.) Simon is in need and has written to him, saying that he required $200. Dicharry sent him $20 and hopes that (Leray) will be able to do something for him. (Leray) can see from the balance-sheet that he is sending that the position at Campté is far from bright. On September 21 Father (Joseph A.) Poullain wrote him that in the three years that Father (V.F.J.) Pellouin has served Campté he has received only $50 from the diocese, and that he cannot maintain himself on the small stipends which he receives. Poullain asked Dicharry to try to obtain for Pellouin a salary like that promised to Father Dauvergne. He hopes (Leray) can help Pellouin and, sure of his approval, he sent $20. He began this letter on the twelfth and is completing it on the fourteenth. Meanwhile he has learned of Quélard's death. The central council of the Propagation of the Faith has allocated 22,000 francs to (Leray). P.S. Dauvergne was promised $125. (Balance-sheet for Capmté enclosed).

to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
On Oct. 5 the writer's sister, Miss Mary Rohan, daughter of Capt. P( ) McCarrick, ended a very holy life with a happy death. She was annointed ten days before her death. On Rosary Sunday she asked Father O'Keefe to put the Ave Maria on her heart hoping it would ease the pain. The morning prior to her death she asked to be read a story from the Ave Maria. Miss Rohan always kept in the presence of God and baptized many children who would have died outside of the church. She instructed hundreds of children and was a source of edification to the whole city. She had always wanted to enter a religious community but her health would not allow it. She rallied many times when death was thought to be near and the departing prayers were recited several times. All knew when she died as the light left her face. Her obituary is being sent to Hudson. Hudson should notice her death in the Ave Maria as she always loved that publication.

Enaut remained with Father (Joseph Mary) Quélard to the last. For a month he had been going to and from Vicksburg, but after the arrival of Father (C.) Mahé, he remained at the bedside. Quélard suffered much. His death was the death of a saint. Last Sunday morning he offered his sufferings for Doctor O'Leary, his nurse, his parents, and his fellow priests of the diocese of Natchitoches. His last words were "Father (Louis) Gergaud is coming for me." Now he rests in peace by Gergaud's side. Father (H.) Oberfeld came to Monroe together with 7 gentlemen and 5 ladies. Next week Enaut will go to Lake Providence and Milliken's Bend to solemnize a funeral service for Quélard, and he will stop at Vicksburg to settle the most pressing claims. He has already spent over $300 and has not settled doctor's bill, funeral expenses, and other outlays. He found $50 in Quélard's possession and received contributions totaling $262.25. Next week his expenses will increase by his going to Lake Providence to see about the state affair and to report to Leray. He knows that Leray will help him to settle the bills.

He is almost penniless. He has not been able to procure any wine in the last three or four months and he needs it. The work on his church at Bayou Cye is progressing, but it takes a very good deal of that which should go into his purse. Father (Joseph Mary) Quélard is dead: Aubrée thought he was getting better as he had not heard anything of him for several days. Dicharry should not think he is discouraged. At Berthet's request he gives him a statement of the suit of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel vs. Executors of Est(ate) of Mrs. Reilly. Reilly died in 1877, testate, appointing B. Farrelly and W(illia)m Homrich executors and having made the Church her uni(ver)sal legatee. The executors caused the real estate and most of the personal property to be sold. The Probate Court, on the application of a creditor, ordered the executors to file an account of their administration. Failing to comply, an order was served to show cause why they should not be punished for contempt. They answered by paying the creditor some $250 and her proceeding stopped. Leake was employed by Berthet to force a settlement. He filed suit to destitute the executors and force them to pay the penalties, 10% for not filing an accounting within one year and 20% for not depositing the money and keeping a bank book as required by law. They filed exceptions, which being overruled, they filed an accounting in which they charge several hundred dollars against the est(ate). Leake hopes to try the case next week.

Raymond, Father G(ilbert):
New Orleans, (Louisiana)
to Bishop F(rancis) X(avier) Leray:
(New Orleans, Louisiana)
Raymond is sending a notice of attachment on the large plot of land at the corner of Bourbon and Orleans. Mrs. (Margaret) Mulligan ordered it. It does not appear to be for either her bonds or her coupons but for the other bill for $3,400 for which she has already obtained a judgment and for which she had sought to have the corporation placed in liquidation. However, that bill is not covered by a mortgage and the bonds and coupons which are covered by a mortgage have priority. It would be best for Leray to consult a lawyer. Mr. (C. Louque) Luke had abandoned the idea of attaching this lot; it is probably the plan to sell it to the (Religious of the Sacred Heart) which has caused him to change his mind. (P.S.) Raymond does not believe that the sale of the property would extinguish the mortgage. There was a similar case involving the sale of the mortuary chapel at the archbishop's residence by the trustees. The court decided that Father (Constantine) Maenhaut's mortgage followed the property. Also the insurance company had a third mortgage on the houses near the cathedral but could not find a purchaser for them, since the first two mortgages would still have priority.

Orestes presumes Henry's partner is a good Democrat and that if (Winfield Scott) H(ancock) and E(nglish) are elected he will be rewarded. Orestes takes no papers and has all he can do to keep up his farm work. He has no knowledge of political parties at present. He is intensely interested in Henry's family and laments the poverty that prevents a closer union. It is a great blessing to have talented children and still greater blessing to have obedient ones. Orestes second son Edward (Brownson) has just gone to town to learn the baker business as he does not like farming. Orestes has only his wife and little girls to help. Charley (Augustus Brownson) the youngest 6 years old, can harness the old horse by getting up on the manger in the stable and work a little. It seems strange to think of Henry wearing glasses and weighing 200 pounds. Henry is far-sighted and Orestes the opposite. Age corrects Orestes eyes and he does not often use spectacles while Henry will have to use them to read as long as he lives. Orestes does not envy Henry his 200 1bs. for he had enough of that 10 years ago. He is now below 180. Physical labor makes a world of difference to a man. Are any of Henry's children near sighted? Nearly all of Orestes' have a tendency to that misfortune. Orestes invites Henry to come to see him.

There are only two Catholic families in the greater society, the Clarks, and Mr. Paul Revere who is a grandson of the famous Paul Revere. Mrs. Ives son, Eugene, has finished his law course and is employed in New York. She heard that Hudson now has a telephone between the college and the convent. Her niece, Ada Clark, has not been able to return to the convent because an escort could not be secured for her. Mrs. Ives son Frank is a Surgeon in the Army and is at Fort Creigh, New Mexico. She hopes Hudson's health has improved. She enjoys the Ave Maria immensely. Regards to Fathers Corby, Granger and Walsh. Hudson should write in care of Mr. Richard H. Clarke, of Morristown, New Jersey. Mrs. Piquette plans to be at the Convent on Father G(eneral)'s feast.

New Orleans, (Louisiana)
to Bishop F(rancis) X(avier) Leray:
(New Orleans, Louisiana)
In giving their house to be the archbishop's residence the Ursulines placed certain conditions, including that two masses would be said on their feast days and that twenty masses would be said for each sister who died. They have asked Raymond to say the Sunday Mass on the feast of St. Ursula and to assist, afterwards, at the taking of the habit by two sisters. He promised to do so, in view of the fact that Archbishop (Napoleon Joseph) Perché had wished him to go there. He does not think Leray will have any objection but wished to let him know that this obligation was imposed by the gift.

Enaut, Father L(udovic):
Lake Providence, (Louisiana)
to Bishop (Francis Xavier) Leray:
(New Orleans, Louisiana)
Enaut is waiting for a boat to go to Milliken's Bend until All Soul's day and thence to Monroe. He will send a full report of Father (Joseph Mary) Quélard's business. He has nearly settled all bills. He calls attention to one of the legacies of Quélard, an infirm woman about 80 years of age, Mrs. Louby. She would have been dead long ago if Quélard had not given her a shelter. Enaut thought the best that could be done was to send her to the Little Sisters of the Poor and the town council voted $20 to send her down and $50 for the Sisters. But their paper will not be worth much until December, and Enaut told them he would advance the money. He drew on Leray for $50 for the Sisters and asks him to honor it. As soon as he gets to Monroe, he will send a money order for that amount. He has taken notes at Lake Providence for his annual report requested by Father (P. Felix) Dicharry and will make his own at the same time.

Robot, O.S.B., Father Isidore:
(Oberlin), Indian Territory
to James Alphonsus McMaster:
New York, New York
Robot is ashamed of his long delay in answering McMaster. Mr. McSorley, customs agent, wrote him that McMaster paid his debt of 58 cents for boxes sent him from Europe, but he received these boxes only 2 weeks ago because of the remoteness of his mission. Miss M.T. Harper of Brooklyn informed him that she was sending him a box containing her annual offering through McMaster's office, and so Robot has delayed his answer so that he may acknowledge the receipt of the box and of McMaster's letter at the same time. Despite many obstacles, the Colony of Benedictine Sisters of the Perpetual Adoration have landed on this side of the Canadian (border). These Sisters maintain their adoration night and day and still discharge their duties with the Indians. Robot is deeply grateful to the readers of the Freeman's Journal and to McMaster for soliciting their prayers and donations, but he still requires financial assistance. He strongly hopes the daily Hail Marys will continue. He has heard nothing from the Catholic Indian Bureau.
