to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

(McMaster), Helen: Baltimore, (Maryland)
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

Helen (McMaster), writing from the Convent of Mount Carmel, informs her father that she had a pleasant day on the feast of the Transverberation of the heart of St. Teresa. They had High Mass and a sermon in honor of the day. Bishop (William H.) Gross, ( of Savannah, Georgia) gave a sermon in the afternoon. After the sermon she was pointed out to the Bishop as a novice and he sent his regards through her to McMaster. Father (Peter) Schwarz visited her the previous day and reported that McMaster was well. Alphonsus returns to college this week. Jen's letter arrived as usual on Saturday. She hopes Sister St. John (McMaster) is not suffering from neuralgia during the warm weather.

to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

(1882)
Murphy, S.J., Father Edward: Ballymahon, Ireland
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Murphy has been occupied with giving missions and retreats. While he was at Knock, three pilgrims witnessed an apparition of the Blessed Virgin on the feast of Saint Aloysius, to whom the people and their pastor, Archdeacon (B. A.) Cavanagh have special devotion. Murphy considers this apparition at a time when Ireland is passing through a crisis, as having significance in the designs of God. He has commenced writing the story entitled "Eily O'Connor".

(1882)
Murphy, S.J., Father E(dward): Kildare, (Ireland)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Murphy is not well and in about three weeks he will go to Galway for a rest. He supposes Hudson received the last chapter or the Irish Legends. Hudson should not believe half of what he hears about Irish outrages, many of the reports are manufactured by the enemy to give reasons for their injustice towards Ireland. Murphy paid a visit to Knock, and he sends an account for the Ave Maria.

(1882)
(Murphy, S.J., Father Edward): (Detroit, Michigan?)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The Ave Maria should be in every Convent and every Catholic household, and in the hands of every Catholic child.

(1882)
(Murphy, Father Edward): (Galway, Ireland)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

P.S. Murphy has just received the December Ave Maria from Gill. "Little Julia" is at present a boarder at the Sacred Heart Convent, Armagh. Murphy is happy to see three chapters of the "Irish Legends" this month. He believes that the Ave Maria is best suited for sodalities. Ireland is quiet now. They have martial law in a mild form.

1882
Murphy, S.J., Father E(dward): Galway, (Ireland)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Murphy thanks Hudson for his book on Purgatory, and his continually sending the Ave Maria. There is nothing like the Ave Maria in all Ireland, and it is needed in the 260 Irish convents, as well as in the schools. In his letter about "Knock", Murphy made one mistake, it was not the late Archbishop of Tuam, but the present one, John Mac Evilly, who authorized the building of the convent. Mac Evilly would be insulted by this mistake for he is jealous of his prestige. Murphy plans to give a mission at Claremorris in June and will visit Knock then, and he will send Hudson another letter from there. He is thinking of writing a short story for the Children's Department entitled "Eily O'Conner". Murphy requests Hudson send him two copies of the book, "Behold Thy Mother", as well as a photo of Hudson.

She will enclose it with eight issues of March 4th to friends that Brown wishes to convert to Catholicism. One of these is the wife of the late President, Mrs. James Garfield.

She hopes to finish the edifice in July, but must then wait in order to complete her plans. She was disappointed that Hudson did not visit Washington last winter.

D(orsey), A(nna) H(anson): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson's letter and check came. They are delighted at the prospect of seeing Hudson in Lent. Dorsey will be glad to tell Hudson about General (Ulysses S.) Grant of whom he hears only through the Catholic papers, which hold him up as a sort of monster. Angie (Eastman) in general health is much better. Clare (Mohun)'s health is no better. Nellie (Ella Loraine Dorsey) is not as strong as she might be. They have heard nothing about the writing for Angie. Dorsey is glad Hudson is interested in Rabbi Raphall's(?) History of the Jews.

Dorsey, A(nna) H(anson): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey asks Hudson for the names of two or three London Catholic Publishers and Lady (Georgiana) Fullerton's address. Tell the Scholastic that the elephant Jumbo, now fourteen feet high, is so enormous that the Smithsonian naturalists had a discussion as to the probability of its being a mastodon, but finally decided that he was the largest elephant on record.

(1882)
D(orsey), A(nna) H(anson): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey informs Hudson that she is moving and gives a lengthy description of her new home. She promises to send a story by December first and asks for an advance. Dorsey wrote to (Maurice Francis) Egan, but has not heard from him because he probably never received the letter due to an incorrect address. A personal interview with Mrs. (Madeleine) D(ahlgren) will be satisfactory and Dorsey thinks Mrs. (William) Sherman would help Hudson in the object in view. Dahlgren and Sherman are not on terms and did not speak for sometime after a remarkable correspondence. A clipping is enclosed.

Jarlath, C.S.C., Brother:
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Jarlath thinks the last volume of the Ave Maria was the most instructive of all. Everyone Jarlath met in Brooklyn and in New York, was displeased with new story "Father Tom". All look for the writings of Mrs. (Anna Hanson) Dorsey.

X-2-i - A.L.S. - 2pp. - 12mo. - {2}

(1882)
Kelly, C.S.C., Father C(harles) H.: Detroit, Mich(igan)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The contents of Hudson's letter surprised Kelly. When Kelly spoke to Bishop (Casper Henry Borgess) he said that it would be inprudent for him to write to Father General asking for a dispensation for Kelly. Kelly desired him then to say nothing of the affair. Why he should write about the matter Kelly cannot understand. Kelly would like to know the light in which he put things and Father General's answer. Father (Ernest) Van Dyke is about the same. They would all be glad to have Hudson for the Feast of the Holy Name.

Seymour, M(ary) Alice: New York, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Seymour returns to New York after an absence of twenty-five years. She is now alone, but has her faith. Yesterday afternoon Seymour spent with Maurice (Francis Egan) and his wife. Today the Ave Marias came with Seymour's Vienna Memories. She has another sketch on the death of the Archduke Francis Carl. In society there Seymour will be addressed as Lady Alice, but for general newspaper work the title had best be dropped. It was strange that a foreign monarch found her worthy to be raised to nobility. Egan and (T. F.) Galwey are the only Catholic gentlemen Seymour knows as yet, but Father Aloysius Jordan of Philadelphia has promised to make her known to Father (H. C.) Denny of St. F(rancis) Xavier's.

(1882)
Shea, John Gilmary: (Elizabeth, New Jersey)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Shea thanks Hudson for the proof and the reminder about Father Aveneau. The death of Father (Claude) Allouez, S.J., Shea gives from a document published by Margry. The claims that Allouez located his grant in Indiana made Shea place his mission there but as these villages shifted easily and often it will be impossible to locate the successive spots. (Francis Xavier) Charlevoix, who visited the fort for several weeks, located it 20-25 leagues up the river. On leaving it he went five or six leagues up to the portage over to the Kankakee. This would fix the fort at that time and the Indians, but as the Miamis left in (Antoine de la Mothe) Cadillac's time and returned the new village might be at a new site. Shea thanks Hudson for the pamphlets, but Hudson must let him return Father (Francis) Cointet, since Shea has a copy.

S(tarr), E(liza) A(llen): (Chicago, Illinois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

A notice about Bishop (Thomas Patrick) Foley's bust executed by Starr's nephew, W(illia)m W. Starr, appeared in yesterday's Tribune and in the Times of July 5th. She trusts that Hudson will publish a notice of the event in the Ave Maria.

(1882)
Starr, Eliza Allen: (Chicago, Illinois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Starr is still laboring under the effects of the worst case of influenza she has had in twenty years. She is sorry about Tincher's story for she did not think Hudson would be afraid because of some one's remarks. Starr has heard much about the affair and has more confidence in her than in what people say. The Roman ladies are down on her, but if she was crazy, she is to be pitied not blamed. They have no business shutting her up in an insane asylum. There is no use contradicting them, not even (Ella) E(des); she is one of the honest ones and feels injured. What Starr has said is for Hudson only. The Roman ladies suspect Starr does not approve of their course with Tincher.

(1882)
Starr, Eliza A(llen): (Chicago, Illinois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Starr sends Hudson a notice which she hopes will be acceptable to Mrs. Howe and Miss Frances (Howe). Hudson may be astonished to know that Starr never received a copy of the Memorial to Rose (Howe). Several of Howe's friends have it, but Starr was not among them. Starr was ignorant of the book's character until it was lent to her.

Starr, E(liza) A(llen): (Chicago, Illinois)
