(Brownson), Orestes (A. Jr.):
Dubuque, Io(wa)
to (Henry F. Brownson):
(Detroit, Michigan)
Orestes is much pleased to see in the copy of the Detroit Free Press which Henry sent to him that Philip J. Brownson is progressing so well. Long may be continue and become as good as he promises to be great. The other children must be doing well. With brains directed by true religion Orestes admits that his only block has come from not obeying the Church. Orestes sends Henry the Dubuque Herald wherein is mentioned that John (Brownson) passed the examination for a Principal's Certificate but whether either of them will be appointed to a school for the coming year is doubtful. Orestes is too old, John too young. He encloses a photograph of John. Orestes second son Edward (Brownson is managing one of Bishop (John Hennessy's) farms near here. Though (Edward) is but 18 year old he is very large and smart. He does not like to work for Orestes so that it will be a blessing if he can please the Bishop in running the Epworth farm. Sarah (Brownson's) is in delicate health but is the housekeeper. Annie (Brownson) and Louisa (Brownson)work on the farm with him. His corn, the best in the vicinity, is nearly ploughed and the gardens are in good order, but the farm is not yet sufficiently developed to support the family. Orestes killed his first ratlesnake yesterday. Orestes wishes he could visit Henry. Nothing pleases him more than hearing of Henry and his family. P. S. He asks if he told Henry that he was thrown out of a wagon by the spring breaking from which he keeps his right thumb so twisted that he can hardly write legibly?

McFadden, P. P., (Father) James:
Letterkenny, (Ireland)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
He is ashamed that he did not acknowledge Hudson's letter of February 2. He is indebted to Hudson for his charitable aid in connection with the disaster of August, 1880, and to the readers of the Ave Maria who contributed to the Flood Disaster Fund. Miss ( ) Smith deserves special mention for her charitable efforts. He is in the midst of many repairs and improvements to the ill-fated Church occasioned by the flood. He has achieved the prevention of a recurrence of the disaster by changing the river course. He describes some of the improvements made in the Church and hopes he will be able to see them all finished.

She thanks Hudson for his letter and enclosure. She likes to keep a copy of what she writes and she sends one copy to Father (M. A.) Holmes of Rochester, (New York), who is interested in her writings. She is sorry Hudson is ill. Early this morning she went to the Catholic Church (St. Peter's) which F(athe)r (P. ) Cuddihy caused to be built, in which work her father greatly assisted him. She has many friends in the vicinity who are quite shocked at her Catholicity. But she is sure she is right and never argues with them.

Mènard, Father Ch(arle)s M.:
Thibodaux, (Louisiana)
to Bishop F(rancis) X(avier) Leray:
New Orleans, (Louisiana)
Yesterday Mènard went to Labadieville to give Father (Julian) Charles the dispatch which Leray sent Mènard. While in Labadieville Mènard visited several houses to learn a little about opinions regarding the Father (Cyprien) Venissat affair. People seemed calm and Mènard does not believe there would be any danger in Venissat returning to his parish. There is a certain antipathy because of old financial affairs which makes these individuals want to see him leave. This is all Mènard can say about Labadieville. Mènard has no proof that Charles promoted the petition. Thomas Badeau is to call on Leray; his only recommendation is having spent some time at Georgetown College. He is the one who took up Venissat's guilt; he stopped at Thibodaux and said that he believed Venissat guilty and it caused a scandal. The next day there was evidence of the contrary.

Toebbe, Bishop A(ugust) M(aria):
Covington, K(entuck)y
to Bishop F(rancis) X(avier) Leray:
New Orleans, L(ouisian)a
Sister Cunigundis Gouley, O.S.B. has asked Toebbe to write concerning her. Toebbe bears witness to her pious deportment during the time she stayed at St. Walburga's convent. However she was entirely deficient in obedience. She seems to have a deep-seated aversion against her Mother Prioress to whom she attributes the fact that she was not permitted to make the perpetual vows. In this her judgment is entirely erroneous. The Mother continued her hoping for a change of conduct. Cunigundis got leave to return to her native city but returned here with a letter from Archbishop Perché and was offered a permanent home in the neighborhood of Covington. She refused to accept.

Gibbons, James, Archbishop of Baltimore, (Maryland):
Baltimore, (Maryland)
to (James Alphonsus McMaster):
(New York, New York)
Archbishop Gibbons regrets that he was engaged in giving Confirmation in the Missions when McMaster called on him. McMaster's daughter, (Helen), (Sister Teresa of Jesus) will undoubtedly persevere in her religious vocation if she inherits any of the strong faith and Scotch tenacity of her father. The pious project McMaster submitted to him is certain to excite the gratitude of the Carmelite Sisters. At first Gibbons was going to try to dissuade him from making the appeal because God will always provide for the Convent, but he sees no objection to it as long as his own name does not appear with it and as long as it looks like an act entirely instigated by McMaster himself. The sisters should not be represented as directly appealing for donations. He has just sent a contribution to the Carmelites of New Orleans, (Louisiana). Soon he will see McMaster's good daughter.

Venissat, Father C(yprie)n:
(Labadieville, Louisiana)
to Bishop (Francis Xavier Leray:
New Orleans, Louisiana)
Venissat did not get to read (Leray)'s letter; Father (Julian) Charles never gave it to him. Venissat was warmly welcomed by his parishioners except in the village where Charles had stirred up feelings against him. The Bienvenu family whom Venissat supported for the eight years he lodged there, worked to stir up people against him. In spite of this, Venissat is honored in his parish. Saturday on mission he had more than 40 Communions and after Mass most of them were in tears. Charles goes to the homes of those who never come to church and who accompanied him to Thibodaux and had a great feast to the scandal of the people. Venissat learned that the defrocked Brother who was with the Christian Brothers at Pass Christian, has been chased out of there for horrible things, he went around getting signatures on a petition. This unfortunate one, whom Father Raymond gave Venissat without a word about his conduct, is playing a hypocritical role and does all the evil possible to be partial to Charles, who flatters him. Judge White, knowing Charles' conduct said that if this priest is left in the diocese, it will be a terrible evil. This is the opinion of all the priests Venissat has seen, in New Orleans or in the country.

The four girls and Mrs. ( ) Morgan went downtown. Hudson's letter was waiting for her when she arrived here on Wednesday. When she left Keokuk she did expect to remain in St. Louis three weeks but the programme was so pleasant she could hardly persuade herself to leave. She has heard nothing of Notre Dame commencement exercises. Mother Lucretia sent a description of the exhibit at St. Mary's. On leaving St. Louis Wednesday morning she met Father (John A.) Venissat, Father C(yprie)n:

There was nothing disagreeable at Venissat's arrival. He found Father (Julian) Charles with this Bordon who hides a black malice under a pious exterior. They had seemed like bitter enemies for some time, in order to better injure Venissat. Meuville also was with Charles and slipped away without even a greeting. Charles went into the village with those he had worked on for 4 months; before that Venissat had been on good terms with them. The rumor is that Charles is the author or one of the authors of the petition. Venissat is convinced that Charles will always be the misfortune of his neighboring confreres. Venissat learned from him the most abominable things about the Fathers Raymond, whom he now praises. Venissat regrets Father (Marius Welté) Wolté's conduct but he is convinced of the truth of his testimony.

Scollard, Father Jo(h)n:
Ponchatoula, L(ouisian)a
to Bishop (Francis Xavier) Leray:
(New Orleans, Louisiana)
Scollard reminds Leray of his promise to the Abbot of Gethsemani to pay Scollard on his note of $400 against the diocese after June. The note will soon expire by limitation. While in N(ew) Orleans yesterday, Scollard called on Father Foot(t)e who said that Rome has condemned Leray's repudiation scheme and that Leray now has to pay interest and carry out the Archb(ishop)'s policy. If so, Scollard hopes to get the interest and will not trouble Leray for the principal at present.
