(Chrysostom) John, C.S.C., Brother: San Francisco, Cal(ifornia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Brother John has written to Father General an account of his interview with Archbishop (John Sadoc Alemany) who refused to give a letter of introduction to his priests; the diocese must support their own paper, the Monitor. Brother has no friend there among the clergy unless Father Hugh (P.J.) Gallagher. He has to "go it alone" which may account for his poor success in California. He called on Marquis D.J. Oliver who said he gave Brother Francis $10 for a life subscription to the Ave Maria but never received a copy. (A note in Hudson's writing gives instructions to start up the Ave Maria to Mr. Oliver. Another note, in another hand, states that Mr. Oliver subscribed for 2 years, October '75 to October '77 and that Brother Francis said there was no life agreement and no $10.00.)

(1883) Mar. 3
D(orsey), A(nna) H(anson): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey sends her story "Little Gladys" and the suggestion that the title of the three sketches she previously sent be changed. "Little Gladys" is a real life story about people Dorsey knew. Nugent Robinson's story "Father Tom" is delightful. Dorsey read Miss Brownson's life of Father (Demetrius) Gallitzin and did not like it. While visiting the death place of Gallitzin, Father Reynolds gave her a book of French hymns which belonged to Gallitzin. Dorsey escaped a reception prepared for her by the pastor and parishioners of Saint Augustine's parish (Washington). She asks Hudson, who (Marion) Muir is? (Madeleine) D(ahlgren), Dorsey hears through Admiral Almy, is erecting a handsome house in a fashionable quarter. She compares her virtues with those of Dahlgren's. "South Mountain Witchcraft", Dahlgren's book published by Osgood has fallen flat. Dorsey discussed Dahlgren's translation of "Notre Dame de Liesse" and Mrs. Jamieson's treatment of the story in her Shrines of the Madonna.

McEvoy, O.S.A., Father C.A., Provincial: Lawrence, Massachusetts
to James A(lphonsus) McMaster: New York, (New York)

Fr. McEvoy desired to call on McMaster while passing through New York for the purpose of giving him an outline of their financial difficulties, but was unable to do so. In the statement in the Catholic Herald, which was intended for the general public, the (Augustinians) dealt in generalities rather than in particulars merely to show that they still, had something to offset their liabilities. The details of the matter were explored in the meeting of the depositors. When the (Augustinians) took charge in 1861, the original debt assumed was $150,000. By compound interest this amount would reach the sum of their present indebtedness, but to save 2 churches from going to pieces they foolishly took on another debt of $196,000. At that time, the Diocese of Boston assured them of aid in handling the burden only the promise was but partially kept since the Diocese contributed but $4000. The press in the vicinity is not very severe, except for the Lawrence Journal, conducted by John P. Sweeny, a nominal Catholic and a member of Gov(ernor) Butler's staff. The Standard of Philadelphia distinguished itself by its haste and severity by giving its opinion before it could be properly informed. In 12 years they will be able to pay off their depositors if they are not driven into insolvency. McEvoy still hopes matters will take a more favorable turn.

Muir thinks she will never write a Catholic story because it would not pay. With the exception of a few religious whose lives are unavailable, Muir sees nothing admirable in individual Catholics. Miss (Eleanor) Donnelly's rendering of legends is lovely.

Paul has just completed his course of music composition in Stuttgart. He has been attempting, but without success, to have a Mass he wrote produced in New York. Muir, Marion: (Morrison, Colorado)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Muir does not want Hudson's thanks for her contributions to the Ave Maria. They are the only religious exercises that she has inclination for. She is provoked with the end of "Father Tom". Muir agrees with Hudson, (Eleanor) Donnelly is very feminine. Mrs. Burnett's story has a good conclusion. The priests in her section of the country do not understand the customs of the people, but they make a good effort to do so.
