Dallas, A(lexander) I.:
Fort Lyon, Colo(rado)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
The area in which Dallas is located has not been visited by cyclones such as Mississippi experienced. He has sent an order for a stone for (William) Montrose (Graham)'s grave, which (Margaret G.) Meade desires placed. Bishop (Joseph) Macheboeuf visited the post recently. He left a young French priest, Father Baugelin at West Las Animas. Dallas thinks he will be recalled because he is certain of only $15 per month and it will cost him $26. Hudson has no idea how the army suffers from want of English speaking mission priests. If an English priest came and spent a day going among the men and not confining himself to the officers there would be a difference. The Protestants catch the men, many Catholics among them by preaching and singing. Most priests come only on week days, reserving Sundays for their regular parish. Did Hudson see Dallas' letter in the Universe. (Manly) Tello sends a copy of his paper to Dallas. Sister Perpetua has a peculiar influence over Elise (Dallas). Marie (Dallas) is doing well at the Art Academy. Lt. Colonel (Elmer) Otis has been promoted to full Colonel in command of the 8th Cavalry.

to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Seymour has done her best to condense her two chapters into one, but finds that it cannot be done. Since Fra Angelico is the prominent Catholic painter of the XV century, she has dealt primarily with him. The trouble with Catholics in America is that they do not take an interest in Catholic art and literature. It may be that Mr. Galwey is correct, when he says he does not need articles on art, for people go to Protestants for this kind of reading.

Louise of St. John the Ev(angelist). D.C., Sister:

to (James Alphonsus McMaster):
(New York, New York)
Sister Louise, prioress (of the Convent of Mount) Carmel, thanks McMaster for his kindness to them. The oranges and lemons arrived in good order on Saturday and also the $26. Sister Teresa (of Jesus) was pleased with her birthday presents. Her health has improved and she has left the infirmary and attends some of the exercises with the community. They are very grateful for McMaster's generous offer of an organ but they must decline it because musical instruments are not allowed within the cloister. The Spanish Discalced Carmelites have used an organ in the Choir for some time in connection with the Sacred Chant, but the Italian Carmelites and all Carmelites outside of Spain have never adopted the practice. Until recently there was a Spanish as well as an Italian General in the Order. The piece in the Review has provoked the sympathies of the nuns for the poor M(other) Prioress who has been brought before the public eye. It greatly mortifies this Prioress were she to know of it because all the nuns consider her a very holy Religious since her visit to their convent. She hopes their trials are now over and that they can live peacefully in their monastery. She encloses a gift of the Holy Ghost (not present), which she drew for McMaster and sends her regards to Gertrude (McMaster) and Alphonsus (McMaster).

McMaster, Sister Teresa of Jesus, (D.C.):
Baltimore, (Maryland)
to (James Alphonsus McMaster):
(New York, New York)
Sister Teresa, writing from the Convent of Mount Carmel, thanks her father for his letter to her on her birthday. The presents were most pleasing and the superior purchased ice cream for the community with the money. The last day of her eighteenth year was spent in recollection along with Sister Agnes. On Pentecost, her birthday, she joined the nuns in Tierce in the choir but was not allowed to complete the hours. After the chanting of Tierce, cards which bore the names of the gifts of the Holy Ghost were placed in the middle of the floor and each nun drew a card. Sister Agnes and herself received a blessing from a Passionist priest in hopes it would cure them. Mother Beatrix once lost her voice for several months but recovered upon being blessed by him with a relic of St. Paul of the Cross. This same priest, by a queer coincidence is the one who blessed (Mrs. James Alphonsus McMaster) when she recovered her sight. Mother Beatrix called her attention to the fact of her mother's devotion to St. Paul of the Cross and now that they are making a Novena to St. Paul, she is doing very well. Her sickness has given her a devotion to St. Joseph. Her confessor told her that devotion to St. Joseph would be beneficial to her in some way on the feast of the Patronage of St. Joseph, and it was on that feast that she recovered well enough to leave her bed. She has never doubted so far that she has a vocation to the Carmelite Sisterhood and hopes that she will persevere. She is perfectly happy even though it is not an easy life. She thanks Jennie and (Al)pho(nsus) McMaster for their letters.

Dorsey sends Hudson copy and intends to complete three more chapters. The Jesuits are delighted about Father Pye (James P. Neale, S.J.) Father (H. C.) Denny visited Nellie (Ella Lorraine Dorsey) to tell her that it was read the evening before at Gonzaga College before the Provincial and all the students. Moffitt, Thomas V.:
Nauvoo, Illinois
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Moffitt protests against the publishing of the story "Elaine", which appeared in the Ave Maria, in book form. At the same time the story appeared in the Ave Maria during the summer of 1882, two friends of his, cousins to one another developed a great attachment for one another and wished to marry. Relatives of both protested and attempted to break the association, claiming the marriage would bring only misery. While the Church grants dispensations for such marriages, it does so only reluctantly. The young man in this case wrote to his non-religious brother for advice, and the brother stated he could get the dispensation if he paid the proper Church authority a high fee. About this time the young couple had been persuaded not to marry. The young man was reading the story Elaine and when in its conclusion the author confirmed the infamous calumny that if one has the money, the question of a dispensation is no trouble; it astonished Moffitt and he wonders if it may yet determine his two friends to marry.

Thorpe, Father T. P.,:
Cleveland, Ohio
to James (Alphonsus) McMaster:
New York, (New York)
Thorpe writes concerning McMaster's comprehensive criticism in the current Freeman's Journal of the critics of the late convention of Delegates of Irish American Societies at Philadelphia, (Pennsylvania). He noticed the remark, "and the convention was run by managers of secret society training and belonging", and wonders if this opinion is a deduction from the points referred to by the critics or if the inference is based on McMaster's own knowledge of the matter. The former answer seems most logical since it is evident that McMaster tried to make the criticism as strong as possible before disposing of it. Many well-known priests who hold responsible positions in their own dioceses had leading parts in the management of the Convention. There are others who interpreted this remark to mean that McMaster has positive knowledge of secret society work in the Convention.

Anderson has been waiting to send a new section of his book. In it is a bibliography on pre-Columbian discoveries and voyages. It will furnish Clarke with all the clues he wants. Many of books could be found in New York libraries. He asks for a copy of Clarke's review when it is published.

Walburga, S.H.C.J., Mother Mary:
Avoca, Minn(esota)
to (James Alphonsus) McMaster:
(New York, New York)
Mother Walburga thanks McMaster for telegraphing to Mr. William J. Onahan who met them and conducted them to the S(acred) Heart Convent where they had a delightful visit. McMaster's name was one of the first ones remembered in the prairied chapel. The people gave the nuns a very hearty and noisy welcome which was most surprising since they expected nothing of that sort. The Convent requires a great deal of work to get it into shape and as no help can be hired the nuns are very busy. They have daily Mass and Communion, therefore spiritual comforts are not lacking. P.S. She gives her regards to Sister Teresa (of Jesus), (D.Cn.), and asks her to pray for their work in the West.

Adam, Father Joachim:
Los Angeles, (California)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Adam thanks Hudson for his congratulatory message on his promotion and the notice in the Ave Maria. The climate agrees with Adam. He encloses a story about Our Lady of Guadaloupe in Spain. Bishop (Francis) Mora is visiting the upper part of Los Angeles Diocese. Los Angeles progresses, it already has over 20,000 inhabitants. On the Blessed Virgin's altar in the Cathedral, there is a statue of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart which was given by the wife of Lieutenant-Governor Downey shortly before she was fatally burned.
