(Dorsey, Anna Hanson): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Yesterday Dorsey was thinking of Louise Lateau, wondering if she were living or dead. The Ave Maria answers her. In a letter she wrote this morning Dorsey told Hudson about the facsimile of the Virgin's wedding ring. By coincidence there is an article on this in the Ave Maria.

1883 Sept. 6
Magenhann, Father A.: Mansfield, (Ohio)
to James (alphonsus) McMaster: New York, (New York)

Magenhann congratules McMaster on his splendid editorial on the Count de Chambord, the future of France, and on the other more important article concerning the ill-guided Irishmen. McMaster is rendering a great service to religion and to his numerous friends. He wishes that all members of the Catholic Press had the courage to take the defensive and offensive as McMaster does. McMaster probably has read the infamous denunciation of the Pope by Finerty of Chicago at the recent mass meeting of the Land Leaguers. It is high time to defeat such heralds of young Ireland and those of young Italy who walk in the path of the Carbonari. As an old reader of the Freeman's Journal, Magenhann approves of the platform of the paper and he is sure that most of McMaster's clerical readers share the same opinion.

She sends her regards to McMaster and to Gertrude.

1883 Sep. 7
Dorsey, Anna Hanson: (Washington, Indiana)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The death of Louise Lateau has caused concern and mystery in Dorsey's mind. She is a believer in miracles but it is incomprehensible to Dorsey why a frail girl should be chosen to have repeated the passion of Christ. She has always had misgivings as to the cause, since Dorsey could not believe it was of a supernatural character but believes Lateau was afflicted with a high strain of hysteria and catalepsy combined. Dorsey claims that she will have a new story by the New Year. She discusses changes that would improve the Ave Maria.

Corrigan, Father P.: Hoboken, N(ew) J(ersey)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Corrigan sends Hudson a copy of the New York Sun which contains a letter in reference to the little pamphlet "Episcopal Nominations" of which Hudson spoke favorably last July. Bishop (Winand) Wigger took exception to what Hudson said and the wrong view of the School Question. Corrigan found no priest who agreed with Wigger as to the prudence of surpressing the pamphlet, because such action forces people to write anonymously. The Bishop has taken no notice of this letter. The Bishops of the East talk eloquently of the education of Catholic children, while under their very eyes thousands of children get no Catholic instruction at all and the Bishops are unwilling to be reminded of such facts. Corrigan thinks Wigger had no right to interfere with printing the work, "Rights of Priests Vindicated".

(McMaster), Alphonse Jo(h)n: Rio de Janeiro, (Brazil)
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

The boat is still lying in Rio Bay. He hopes the sickness his father complained of in his last letter has not troubled him any more. He has no worries over small pox or yellow fever since no one can excape dieing of whatever disease he is supposed to die of and it does no good to worry about it. He hopes Gert(rude) (McMaster) is well. There is no prospect of their getting off and it may be another month before they go.

Muir, Marion: Morrison, (Colorado)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson's last letter to Muir had a humorous touch to it even if it was at her expense. She understands why Professor (Arthur) Stace slighted her and thought she was pursuing him with the desperation of declining years. The article "Colorado" has been reprinted in Idaho Territory. Miss Clifford's mother is an invalid but she is likely to call on Hudson. Muir is writing the first chapter of a story.

Sister Teresa notifies her father that she was presented with a legal document that morning. Mother (Louise of St. John the Evangelist) did not wish her to receive it at first, since McMaster had said nothing about it but the man who delivered it said that each one of the family had received a copy. She accepted it and now sees fit to notify McMaster at once. Father (Michael) Muller called to see the nuns yesterday and Sister Teresa had a chance to talk to him. He mentioned seeing McMaster who is in good health. Sister St. John (S.H.C.J.) McMaster has not yet been cured according to her last letter. The relics that Hudson desired have been procured. O'Cleary encloses a letter from a friend which contains reliable news. He will forward news items so often, but he cannot accept renumeration for this service. O'Cleary wishes information regarding the climate of the Columbus Diocese.

Churchill, (Harriet) Hattie B.: Dorchester, (Massachusetts)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Churchill is going away for a little change. "History d'un denier d'or" can be translated as a story, eliminating the controversial remarks. If she translates "La Lizardiere," "Les Robineau" and "La Maison de Famille" for the Ave Maria, they will occupy ten or fifteen numbers. Due to poor eye sight Churchill cannot write as frequently as she wants to. Mr. (Thomas) Noonan, a Catholic publisher, asked Churchill for a book to publish.

Florentine, Sister Mary: Austin, Texas
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sister Florentine regrets to learn that her design was not satisfactory. The changes that are to be made are negligible; a few crosses omitted would make the design legible in the opinion of the engraver. Sr. Florentine is sorry to hear of the accident that befell Father-General (Edward Sorin).

(Muir, Marion Mackenzie): (Morrison, Colorado)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Muir did not write with a view of obtaining information regarding the learned gentleman's whereabouts. She thinks Hudson does quite well away from the University. They are a graceless lot. It would not do for Muir to visit Notre Dame, for after the sordid statement in the last Scholastic the professors would run and hide lest she should borrow money of them. She has seen many photographs of Rome and she is overwhelmed. She saw Correggio's Magdalen but doesn't like it.

(McMaster), (Ger)trude:
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

(Ger)trude writes McMaster from the train from Baltimore, (Maryland). She has spent 2 nights in Baltimore and has visited Sister Teresa of Jesus (McMaster) in the Carmelite Convent there. Sister Teresa is in fine condition spiritually and physically. She is slowly reading the life of Martin Luther and is interested in his gradual falling away. His early life contains a valuable lesson. She also visited Sister St. John (McMaster) at the (Convent of the Holy Child Jesus) in Sharon (Hill), (Pennsylvania), and found her sickness a little better. In case Mr. Harper is unable to come she will not be home until Monday and if she does not send a telegram, her father should not be worried.

S(mith), J. F(rancis): (Brinker Institute) Denver, Colorado
to James F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He is about to start on a trip with the Halls. His mother is anxious that he should go to Italy to study as soon as possible, but he thinks he ought to try to get along without her help. He asks advice on how much money it would take. He took every opportunity to advance his art studies. He used to think that Prof. A. C. Unsworth was treated rather coolly at Notre Dame, and when the professor came to Denver, Smith spoke in his favor. But he finds the Unsworth made a fool of himself. He relates the incidents.
