Louise of St. John Evangelist Mother: Baltimore, (Maryland)

She thanks him for the Life of Father Herman which he is sending. S(iste)r Teresa (McMaster) suffers with her stomach, but it is better now—she is trying to be a true Carmelite. They have enough Bitter Water on hand. P.S. She asks him to remember her to Mrs. Keiley.

She received the two Ave Maria's containing the article by Dr. Pooley.

1884 April 2,
(Egan), (Maurice) Fran(cis): New York, (New York)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (Key Francis, Cuba)

Egan is anxiously expecting a list of John's friend's qualifications before he can secure him a post. He will be only too glad to help him settle on shore. Today, the day after (James Alphonsus McMaster's) sixty-fourth birthday, is unpleasant in New York. Egan expected to hear John's father speak of coffins, but instead he displayed a splendid pall of engraved gold sleeve buttons. Maria has the whooping-cough; and Egan has moved to Brooklyn. Larned has written, explaining the business of ranching to Freeman readers. Egan has not been to see any play, it being Lent. The white elephant, which is not white, is here. Egan will be glad to see John again. John will have to help him make an intricate bookshelf.

Jarlath, O.S.F., Father: Killaen, (Ireland)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Jarlath does not want the whole series of the Ave Maria. Separate volumes which contain the whole of any series of articles or stories would suffice, since he wants them for a stories would suffice, since he wants them for a circulating library. Jarlath's parish is poor, it is mainly composed of boatmen of the Lakes. They are models of goodness despite temptations to their faith. Their poverty is beyond anything seen outside Ireland. Fifty families are fed every winter at their gate. Jarlath has a book being published by Benziger. He thanks Hudson for the gifts that the Congregation of the Holy Cross sent to their House.

1884 Apr. 3,
McMaster, Ja(mes) A(lphonsus): (New York, New York)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (Key Frances, Cuba)

McMaster hopes John has by now reached Key Frances and received their letters, but he is afraid John did not get the letters that were sent to Lisbon. He is afraid John will not get to Mass, although there is some chaplain at Caiberian. If he were at Cardenas or to Havana there would be subscribers of the Freeman he could call on, who would treat him well for McMaster's sake. But both these places are too far away unless he meets with an accident; it would be a good thing, however, to keep to the names in memory, along with "coffins". John is asked to write promptly on arrival. If he wants money McMaster will send it, and if he is tired of sailor life and wants to go home, McMaster will buy him off the brig. Sister St. John (McMaster, S.H.C.J.) is suffering much and confined to bed, and neither she nor Sister Teresa (McMaster, D.C.) can write him although they pray for him continually. McMaster wants to help the steward who was kind to John, but needs more information. John's Captain is a slack correspondent. McMaster has told the owners of the ship, who have had no news from Captain Atwood, of John's letters. It will be of help to John with Captain Coombs if he writes often. P.S. McMaster sends $2. because he does not know if the letter will reach John.

O'Meara, Kathleen: (Paris, France)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

O'Meara cannot obtain a photograph of the old frontis piece. Geraldine O'Meara was told that the pictures are seldom photographed. The one Hudson has is the Murillo, the best representation of the mystery. She thinks the Ave Maria would lose if Hudson rejected it. O'Meara has been asked to say word in the Ave Maria about Monsieur Ram's book, which has been attacked by a jealous individual.

Tierney, Father Michael: New Britain, Conn(ecticut)
to R(ichard) H(enry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

Answering Clarke's of Mar. 13, Tierney sends the address of Bishop (Francis P.) McFarland's brother, Jerome McFarland. He will send Clarke's letter to Jerome McFarland and ask information on the Bishop's early life. Jerome McFarland would know if his brother, the late Dr. (John) McFarland of Tiffin, O(hio), had any memoranda concerning the Bishop. Tierney gave a large collection of the Bishop's letters to the Sisters of Mercy, eight years before, who pretended to be engaged in a sketch of the Bishop's life. Nothing was ever done in that direction. These letters have never been returned and they would be of benefit, if on hand. A niece is Mrs. Dr. M. Leahy of Tiffin, Ohio.

The nuns are very fond of (Sister) St. John, and there is nothing McMaster can do for her. The Mother thinks McMaster should defer his visit to Sharon for a few weeks. She herself is going to (Mrs. Robert W. Lesley's), Thursday, and will write him from there. She instructs him to send for her in case he is ill.

Parke, Father H.F.: Wheeling, West V(irgini)a
to Rich(ar)d H(enry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

Since last corresponding with Clarke, Parke's frail health has changed for the worse. Also he had to go to the missions again. He is thus cut off from his library and notes and cannot give Clarke a continuation of his "notes". He does not know when this abominable state of affairs will end. Parke believes that Clarke can be better aided by Father (J.T.) Sullivan who served at the Cathedral under Bishop (Richard Vincent) Whelan. Whereas Parke in the past was occupied with missionary labors, Sullivan has written a book on the Mass and enjoys such work. Clarke should tell Sullivan that he has seen Parke's printed "Notes" through Bishop (Francis) Janssens and on application has found Parke unable to publish or prepare further. Parke is ready to be of as much use as possible to any of the clergy who will help Clarke on the later period of his deceased prelates. P.S. Parke thinks Sullivan has already prepared a short life of the sort.

Healy was in California when Clarke's letter arrived. Father W(illia)m Keegan of Brooklyn, N(ew) Y(ork) can give the best account of Bishop (David William) Bacon's youth and priestly life. Healy knows little of Bacon, who left no notes or records of his episcopal labors. Healy has in mind to put together some account of the Missions, etc. in Maine, but a record of Bacon's time would rely upon scanty materials. He cannot say when he will begin until after the division (is) completed of that diocese.
