1884 Jul. 1
Hall, Charles S.: Binghampton, N(ew) Y(ork)
to H(enry) F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Hall asks the favor of some blank deeds and mortgages to use in his law dealings with Sawyer and Knowlton of Ann Arbor and also some information on that firm. Also he would like to be referred to an attorney in Iowa to handle matters there. He believes (Grover) Cleveland more likely than any other man to carry New York State. Kelly, he says, would sell out anybody for the New York Mayoralty, and his critics will probably turn on this. The reform bills passed last winter give great power to the mayor and Kelly is out unless he can deceive him. That probably in his price; he will go for Blaine if it well help him, and they may as well have a Republican as a Democrat. They know they can make more out of a Republican. Kelly would sell Bayard as soon as Cleveland. As to Bayard and Cleveland, Cleveland is the stronger intellectually, but less cultured and experienced than Bayard; his firmness makes up for his lack of experience. Cleveland would run as well as Bayard in New York, and in any other Democratic state, and the independents will prefer him. The Irish will not get very far out of the traces and all of Tammany will not follow Kelly. Hall would prefer to give Kelly the mayoralty and trust to luck to clear things up after a Democratic president is elected.

(18)84 July 3
Ambrose, Sister Mary,: St. Mary's (of the Woods), Indiana
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

McMaster's letter of the 18th arrived during the busy time thus was not answered sooner. The entire Community is grateful for McMaster's kindness to them, especially those who were Mother Theodore's daughters in Christ when McMaster was first attracted to St. Mary's years ago. The Sisters of Providence hold the editor and the Freeman's Journal in high esteem. When Sister Mary Joseph was on her death bed she humbly wished that her sister in France would not see a glowing obituary concerning her in the Second Edition of "Le Femme Apotre", and hoped that the truthful McMaster would compose her death notice instead. This tribute to Sister M. Joseph and other favors to the Community, have not one unnoticed by the Sisters. Bishop (Francis Silas) Chatard, of (Vincennes, Indiana) and Monsignor (August) Bessonies are grateful for the kindness of McMaster to the Sisters at St. Vincent's (Orphan) Asylum, (Vincennes). When the opportunity arises she will show McMaster's letter to their mutual friends, consignor (Julian) Benoit, and Mr. Doherty of Louisville, (Kentucky). On July 25, when most of the Sisters will be at the Convent, the Mass and about 400 Communions will be offered for McMaster's intentions.

Father General (Edward Sorin, C.S.C.) is acting superior in her absence and a most amiable one he is. Sister Felicia feels lost after Mother. (Mullany, F.S.C.), Brother Azarias (Patrick Francis): (Ellicott City, Maryland)
to (John O'Kane) Murray: (Brooklyn, Long Island)

Brother apologizes to Murray and his sister for not having sent his regrets at not being able to call when returning from Newport and for not acknowledging Murray's little work on English literature. Two students are awaiting entrance exams, one a nephew of J(ames) G. Blaine. Brother is very busy working on a paper to read in New Orleans before the International Congress of Educators. The most damaging thing about Murray's book is that he loses temper in discussing Irish troubles-and that will never do for a textbook. A calm, statement-without epithets-of Ireland's grievances would be better all around. He suggests that Murray give up writing for a year or two to restore his health and energy and invites him to come down and spend a week or two.

to H(enry) F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Hall asks Brownson's advice on a Michigan mortgage question. Hall believes that Cleveland will run, and, though there is talk of Irish defection, he thinks it will not amount to much. Kelly will not fight but he would not hesitate to betray a man he had nominated himself if he could gain by it. Many Republicans will not support Blaine and Hall expects a Democratic majority in New York. He supposes Michigan will stick to its idols.

Rademacher, B(isho)p Jos(eph): Nashville, Tenn(essee)
to Rich(ard) H(enry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

Radamacher, when he received Clarke's letter last March with regard to a biographical sketch of Bishop (James) Whelan (O.P.), had started to refer Clarke to Whelan's Dominican Brethern to whom he retired in 1863. But he decided to wait and see what he could do. After a careful investigation of the Episcopal Archives, Rademacher can find nothing that Clarke could use. Gathering materials from among the people would be a rather disagreeable task as he was by no means favorably remembered. He is satisfied Clarke had better consult the Dominicans as to the propriety of publishing a sketch of Whelan's life and let them furnish the data.

Gallagher thinks John's plan of staying at a boarding house is an excellent one, and urges him to continue doing so, travelling in horse cars, while he is working Troy. He is confident John will do as well as a regualr travelling agent, but warns him not to overwork. He reminds John to remit before 3p.m. on Friday, and let them know by mail how much and by what express he has remitted.

Stanislaus, C.S.C., Bro(ther): Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stanislaus sends Hudson a copy of the "Eagle" containing a notice of the appointment of Father (P. F.) O'Hara to St. Anthony's Parish, (Brooklyn) New York. O'Hara, Maurice (Francis) Egan, and M. V. Hickey inquired about Hudson's health. Stanislaus met Mr. Gill at Egan's; Gill is writing an article on Notre Dame for "Manhattan Magazine", and he wishes illustrations which Father (Thomas) Walsh should send immediately. If Smith's views are not available, McDonald might be engaged to take photographs, or an artist from Van Gugen's Chicago might be engaged to work up the fire scenes. Stanislaus saw (Patrick) O'Shea about the Ave Maria's three books he is publishing; he has printed but 250 copies of each to see how they will sell. He will pay ten percent royalty to Notre Dame. It would be well to put them on the Ave Maria list. O'Shea feels bad over the coldness with which he alleges he has been treated by Notre Dame. He was surprised when Brother Francis abruptly took "Our Lady of Lourdes" from O'Shea and gave it to the (William) Sadlier's. That was after the burning of Father (J. B.) Champeau's, "Life of Christ", translated by Mother Angela, which was lost in the fire. The Sadliers were disposed to be sullen and pouty and Stanislaus saw them several times before getting an understanding about "Metropolitans", even now it is unsatisfactory. Mrs. (William) Sadlier is fickle and vague. The old man, Agnes's father is sickly and can't settle down to business. Hickey would like to send his brother-in-law to Notre Dame for a few weeks to get an idea of press work and the management and care of presses.

He has learned from McMaster's journal that Kirner's mission was legitimate, and states that if Bishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan started the movement, he will love him more than any prelate except Bishop (William Henry) Elder. He explains that in his letter to McMaster he only wished to give some points that might be used, and thanks McMaster for using them. He corrects a mistaken impression regarding Memphis, stating that it has no Italian church, and begs McMaster to get some book or pamphlet on Father Kirner's mission for him. He asks that his name be kept secret from Father Kirner.

Hill is anxious to introduce the Ave Maria to Argentina, but before he does he must see Dillon and see that the Ave Maria will not interfere with his paper. If he agrees that it will not, Hill will go to Jacobsen's, the chief bookseller in Buenos Aires, to see about prices. The heavy duty on foreign publication is a nuisance here. Hill's order has founded a second House at Salto. Father Fidelis is in Rome but they expect him to return for the chapter. Hill asks Hudson to forward a message of thanks to Jordan for the verses.
