1884 Nov. 1
(McMaster), Gertrude: Carmel, (Baltimore, Maryland)
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

(Ger)trude wishes (McMaster) a very happy Feast and remarks what a satisfying day it is. She is so glad he had a happy Sunday, the first alone. It is God who helps both of them by giving him his strength. She hopes he does not mean literally "Forget thy Father's house and thine own People" because the end and aim of a Carmelite life is not to love people less but love God more. Mother Beatrix told her that he did not put too much gossip in his letters. The Sisters told her to tell him that she is 'fat and happy', and looks very much at home. She was permitted to attend the Matins for the first time. It was nice of Mr. Harper to spend part of Sunday with McMaster. She is pleased that the Keileys have taken him under their wing. The letter from Dobbin was consoling to her. The figs arrived safely, and they do not need any more apples. When he visits she will tell him about the shawl. The steel thimbles and pieces of silk were very welcome. November 2 - They are having beautiful weather and she wants to keep his sunshine in their hearts. She sends her love.

to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

She tells McMaster that yesterday (Nov. 2) the Mother and Mother Agatha left for Cheyenne, while Mother St. Anthony and her little Indian left for Avoca. Reverend Mother does not think she will be away long, but Saint John supposes it will be rather longer than she expects. The water came the day she wrote, so she could not acknowledge it. She is enjoying Bishop Hedley's "Spirit of Faith".

1884 Nov. 3
Tierney, Father M(ichael): New Britain, Conn(ecticut)
to R(ichard) H(enry) Clark(e): (New York, New York)

Clarke's postal was a surprise as the parties that Tierney wrote and put Clarke in communication with were supposed to send all information directly to Clarke. Judge McManus of Hartford, now Quartermaster General of the State, has prepared something for Clarke. Tierney had lost sight of the matter although he will be glad to assist Clarke. He failed to get the letters (of Bishop Francis McFarland) from the Sisters (of Mercy). His brother John (McFarland) of Wapakoneta, Ohio will surely give the early family history.

Ryder has given his wife all his pay on every Saturday but one and he has been under the influence of liquor but twice since his wife arrived. 1884 Nov. 5
Starr, Eliza Allen: (Chicago, Illinois)
to Richard (Henry) F.(!) Clarke: (New York, New York)

Clarke has shown marvelous patience concerning Starr's sketch of Bishop (John) McMullen. After reading the short sketch she wrote for the Catholic Family Annual, Starr was quite sure of what she thought but could not put it into words for Clarke. She waited until she could do so. She had begun the sketch and now she can complete it. She thanks Clarke for treating her so well. She cannot write unless the subject is before her and all of it in hand. She is giving two art lectures a week and is busy. But she considers the writing of this sketch a privilege. Some night the inspiration will come to her to finish the sketch. P.S. Starr asks if she spells his name correctly.

1884 Nov. 6
(Edes, Ella B.): Rome, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edes sends a second edition of the "Immaculate Conception". If it proves too long or too late for Hudson, Edes will try another periodical next year. She does not at all want to interfere with (Daniel) Paul. Edes hopes soon to send some short articles. She will not say on what, because she has been ousted from the field by telling beforehand what she intended to do. Paul once Played Edes the same trick. Edes has Hudson's 25 francs safe, but Duke (Scipione) Salviati has not yet returned to Rome. She will forward a receipt as soon as she can secure one. The Pope (Leo XIII) does not approve of the style of the mosaic medallion of the tomb and the committee will not yield so far. They are looking with curiosity and anxiety to the coming consistory. Edes hopes the Pope will not remove the present Secretary of Propaganda. The Pope moves around at will to make way for his dear Perugians. She sends journals with the Apostolic Letter on St. James of Compostella and the letter on sacred music. They can make head nor tail of the telegram relative to the result of the Presidential election. Edes hears Father P. Corrigan is about to issue a pamphlet "Bishops and Priests". It is untrue that his former pamphlets are approved, spread or read in Rome. (Ulysses) Mori translated number 1.

to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

Mother said last night that Archbishop (Patrick) Ryan is already in Baltimore so (Ger)trude supposes the visit to Sharon Hill has been postponed until after the Council. She wants (McMaster) to tell Mrs. Keiley her petitions will be remembered. As Advent is almost here, She thinks he had better have his party soon. Her little mother' to her, she was cut out for a Carmelite. At one time he thought otherwise. She is anxious to get Rho's (Jack) address now that he has started northward. She prays everyday for her friends as it is the only way to show her regards. Mrs. Keiley's report of him was satisfactorily. Everyone is well at Carmel except S(iste)r Agnes.

1884 Nov. 9
Defouri, Father James H.: Santa Fe, (New Mexico)
to R(ichard) H(enry) Clark(e): (New York, New York)

Defouri, acknowledges Clarke's of November 1, says that Bishop J(ohn) B. Miege deserves a place in Clarke's work. Defouri wrote a long obituary notice of Miege but the Jesuits at Woodstock cut it up in an unmerciful manner. Clarke should write Father Paul Ponziglione, S.J. for a copy. The Obituary was correct up until Miege retired to the Jesuits. Possibly the notice was sent to Woodstock where they knew more than anyone about Miege as a Jesuit and bishop. Defouri knew him as Bishop and came from the same place in France. P.S. Defouri has never owned Clarke's Lives. He is preparing a sketch of the life of Bishop J(ohn) B. Lamy and hopes to see it printed this winter.

R(yder), E(liot): Chicago, (Illinois)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

From the way Hudson writes it seems he has lost all faith in Ryder. The truth was bad but misrepresented is worse. Ryder had to send his wife the money with which to come to Chicago, that is why he is without money. Ryder has promised his mother to come home. The expense is an obstacle and if Professor (Joseph) Lyons will get him a railroad pass Ryder will be grateful.

Dorsey, A(nna) H(anson): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey acknowledges the receipt of the checks. She believes the Republican candidate, (James G.) Blaine's defeat was caused by Blaine's spending too much time in Ohio, the remark of the Protestant clergymen before Blaine, of "Rum, Romanism and Rebels", which Blaine failed to denounce thus losing the Irish vote, and the dinner he attended at Delmonico's given by the millionaire monopolists. Dorsey could forgive (Grover) Cleveland for being a Democrat, but having a president who hanged criminals that is a national disgrace. Dorsey discusses the national political scene at great length. P(atrick) O'Shea has not the right to "Flemmings"; before sending the story to Hudson, Dorsey told Father (Neal) Gillespie that she reserved the right to have the story published in book form once it was completed in the Ave Maria. Hudson conceded this right. FatherGeneral (Edward Sorin, C.S.C.) was in New York at the time the story was concluded and he gave O'shea the right to publish it in book form. Dorsey was negotiating with Kelly and Piet of Baltimore to publish it. Before Gillespie died, he wrote Dorsey about the arrangement that was made with O'Shea and how little O'Shea had sent as payment for the right to publish two of Dorsey's works. O'Shea's failure to live up to his agreements cost him the right to publish any of Dorsey's works. She considers her story "Adrift" excellent despite Mother Angela's offensive letter stating that the story was too sensational for the Ave Maria. Dorsey has not written to (William) Sadliers Company, but she learned from Mr. Spofford, Librarian of Congress, that they had not complied with the copyright laws and have not reserved rights on "Tangled Paths".

to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

(Sister) (Ger)trude (McMaster) will have to make confession to Mrs. Keiley when he failed to write. She hopes nothing unpleasant prevented him from visiting. Tomorrow is her Feast-day and she knows there will be many prayers for her friends. The dear lord is filling McMaster's heart with His peace and holy joy for all his generosity. She wonders if he has seen Auntie Brown or the Keileys lately. She wishes he would give a copy of the "Devotion to the Holy Face" to Mr. Harper. She is sorry she did not read F(athe)r Hermann's life at Rome. If she knew Pho's (Jack) address she would ask permission to write him. P.S. Nov(ember) 15 — After she had read his letter she asked Mother Beatrix to add a few lines to her letter. So he has been walking through the shadows of the valley and the sunlit mountains seemed out of reach. It will not be long before he will be richly merited for his sacrifice. Her dear angel is sent with the old blessing at night.

Sestini, S.J., Father B(enedict): Woodstock, Maryland
to (Richard H.) Clarke: (New York, New York)

Sestini promised an article about Bishop Miege but could not find suitable information. He was looking for an article on Father (John Baptist) Miege, (S.J.), by a young student at Woodstock, published in the Watchman of St. Louis in July (1883). He hopes to find the article but Clarke might find it in New York. Sestini wants Clarke to know the article was incorrect in stating Miege was proposed for Professor of theology in Rome. He was with Miege the whole four years he was in Rome. They left Rome when the 1848 revolution broke out. They met in France and at Georgetown before Miege went to the Rocky Mountain Missions. He recounts other times they were together. He hopes to soon have more information for Clarke than was in this letter.

to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (Boston, Massachusetts)

Her father promised to forward the letter if she wrote John. She is glad he is cheerful when he would be tempted to be otherwise. Mrs. Keiley says he is planning to return a week before Christmas; Gertrude trusts she will see him then, and that he will get to Philadelphia as he had hoped. Sister Teresa (McMaster, D.C.) laughed when Gertrude explained a joke to her. A letter from Miss Aggie Harper said John looked well. Gertrude hopes he is having a pleasant trip, and bids him be cheerful and courageous. She sends regards.

(McMaster, James Alphonsus): (New York, New York)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (Boston, Massachusetts)

John wrote a nice letter which cheered McMaster, who misses him. But John is at the age of manly responsibilities, and McMaster himself is not past it. John should rejoice in his youth, and should not forget to pray. He should try to receive Communion once a week, at least. In Boston he will have a cordial welcome if he calls at the Redemptorists, "Our Lady of Perpetual Help", where there are more Irish than Germans. If the Jesuits at St. Mary's Church, and Father O'Connor, (S.J.), of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, knew him as McMaster's son, they would treat him kindly. He encloses the key of the skates, asking John to write if he receives it. McMaster has given John's address to (Gertrude McMaster), so John should keep the office informed of changes of address, and should ask his hotels to forward his letters.

The dying man refused to renounce Freemasonary, so Sorin refused to baptize him. The case was sent to Rome from whence the reply came that under the circumstances Sorin could baptize the dying man. Sorin instructed Cooney to write Hudson for a copy of Rome's answer which was published in the Ave Maria, either in 1877 or 1878. Sessions of the Third Plenary Council are held twice daily. Merrick, W(illia)m M.: Baltimore, (Maryland)
to Richard H(enry) Clarke: N(ew) Y(ork), (New York)

Answering Clarke's of Nov. 15, Merrick suggests that Clarke see in the "Mirror" the proceedings and the reception given to the Plenary Council by the citizens of Baltimore. The scope of the task assigned to Merrick by his bishop on that occasion did not admit of any allusion to the special topics mentioned in Clarke's note. In fact he had no opportunity for any personal conference which would enable him to discuss such matters with any member of the Council. Some of the irregularities mentioned in Clarke's letter were unknown and undreamt of until he was advised of them. Such things ought to be remedied by the bishops of Clarke's Diocese. Merrick is quite confident that they have not been indulged in, in this state. The opinion of Judge (Roger B.) Taney and others to which Clarke alluded, Merrick has never seen, but he understands that it was directed chiefly to the provisions of the Bill of Rights of Maryland and, as a result of that opinion, the act of 1832 was passed making the Archbishops of Baltimore a corporation sole with power to take and hold the property of the different Churches for their appropriate objects.
